She saw Elian Zouch offer a faint smile.
Ottilie Sewell nodded in acknowledgment.
She wasn't close to Elian; they had barely exchanged more than a few words in the past.
All she knew was that he had once relentlessly pursued Nyssa Tarrant.
Director Zouch personally escorted Ottilie through her comprehensive physical exam.
There were no waiting lines, and her records were kept strictly out of the system, documented entirely by hand by top specialists.
Three vials of blood were drawn.
By the time they stepped out of the hospital, dusk was falling.
Ottilie didn't get into Soren's car. "Soren, you can head back. My place isn't far from here. I'll just walk."
"You're being too polite, Ms. Sewell. Just call me Soren. Director Zouch mentioned your test results won't be ready for a few days. Until then, please come stay at the house so you can properly recover."
Ottilie immediately understood the underlying message.
Yorath Fordham thought she was dirty. He was terrified that while waiting for the results, she would go out, fool around, and catch some vile disease.
Locking her up at his estate was his way of ensuring she stayed completely safe and isolated.
"Fine."
Ottilie got into the car.
Soren drove her straight to the Meridian Villa.
The moment she walked through the door, the rich aroma of a home-cooked meal hit her.
Ottilie swapped her shoes and headed toward the kitchen.
There, she spotted Yorath's long-time housekeeper.
The woman had originally been a maid who came with Yorath's mother when she married into the family, and she had practically raised all three Fordham boys.
Her status in the Fordham household was incredibly high.
Even men like Jevon Crawford and Elian Zouch had to greet her with polite respect whenever they saw her.
Every time they visited, they brought little gifts just to keep her happy.
Three years ago, this was the exact same woman who had ruthlessly kicked Ottilie out onto the streets.
Yorath looked at her coldly. "What were you just saying to Ms. Sewell, Tanya?"
Tanya didn't miss a beat. "Oh, I was just reminding Ms. Sewell about a few details regarding how to properly take care of you—"
Before she could finish her sentence, a vicious slap echoed through the room, landing squarely on her face.
Yorath had incredible strength; what looked like a casual backhand sent Tanya stumbling so hard she nearly collapsed to the floor.
A bright red handprint instantly swelled on her cheek, two of her teeth were knocked loose, and blood poured from the corner of her mouth.
Tanya was completely stunned. She clutched her face, taking several agonizing seconds before she managed to gasp.
Yorath's voice was absolute ice. "Ms. Sewell is in poor health. I brought you here to serve her because I thought you were meticulous in raising my brothers and me. But you're just an old servant who forgot her place. Absolutely uneducated."
Tanya's eyes went wide with sheer horror.
What had she just heard?
What did the young master just call her?
Yorath delivered the final blow. "Don't let me ever see your face again."
