Winona paused for a few seconds.
Seth let out a scoff. "If you don't have the guts, don't make empty oaths."
Just as the words left his mouth, Winona declared, "I hope Herbert gets hit by a car tomorrow."
The siblings fell into stunned silence. They just stared at each other, eyes wide.
Winona let out a cold hmph. "Who doesn't have the guts?"
This time, Seth was genuinely shocked. He didn't speak, just stared intently at Winona, as if trying to peer through her skin to see if a demon had possessed her.
Winona knew her current attitude was bizarre. Just this morning, she had been thrilled to attend the banquet solely because Herbert was going to be there. And now, she was suddenly cursing him to get hit by a car.
She coughed, took a sip of orange juice, and said, "Actually, I've finally figured things out."
Seth asked, "Figured what out?"
Winona replied, "Figured out that he's never going to like me."
Winona had harbored a crush on Herbert since childhood, simply because he was better looking than all the other kids they grew up with.
Once they started school, Herbert was always at the top of the class, never dropping below the top three.
Attracted to excellence, Winona fell even harder.
But while she chased after him with one-sided devotion, Herbert never gave her the time of day.
Instead, he had a soft spot for the stubborn and resilient Rhea Sawyer.
In her past life, once Winona saw the light and finally started treating him coldly, Herbert's attitude toward her surprisingly improved.
Herbert was just a glutton for punishment. If you were nice to him, he couldn't care less, finding it completely devoid of challenge. If you treated him like trash, he'd suddenly start inching closer.
Someone like that could never love a person long-term. He only liked the thrill of the chase, the urge to conquer. Maybe once he got what he wanted, it brought him a brief sense of accomplishment. But he would grow bored of it very quickly.
Seth remained silent for a long time. He pressed his lips together, unscrewed the juice bottle, and refilled Winona's glass. Without any of his usual mockery, he simply said, "You two do share one redeeming quality."
