Martha came out to clear the dining table and noticed Winona standing there, spacing out. "Miss, is everything alright?"
For the first time, Winona asked Martha about her family's history. "Did my parents ever have a good relationship?"
Martha paused her cleaning and thought for a moment. "I only started working here when you were four. By then, they were already barely speaking. But from what I heard from other housekeepers, Mr. and Mrs. Lennox used to be very much in love in the beginning."
Winona asked, "Then when did they stop talking?"
"That, I'm not too sure about," Martha replied. "I got here too late."
Winona nodded and didn't press further.
Martha asked, "What would you like for breakfast tomorrow, Miss?"
"I'd like some ravioli," Winona said after a moment's thought.
"You got it," Martha replied with a warm smile.

Winona slept soundly through the night. After waking up and getting ready the next morning, she changed into her Brighton International Academy uniform: a crisp white dress shirt, a navy pleated skirt, and a gold-stamped name badge pinned to her chest.
*Senior Class 1, Winona Lennox,* followed by the last four digits of her student ID. *0009.*
When she went downstairs, only Seth was there. Lakeside High's uniform was a painfully basic blue and white tracksuit. He was sitting at the table, almost finished with his food.
Winona set her backpack down, washed her hands, and took the seat next to him. "Wait for me when you're done."
Seth paused. "Why?"
Winona replied, "I'm going to school with you today."
Even though they attended different schools, the route was the same.
Seth ate a ravioli without saying a word.
Annoyed, Winona tapped him on the shoulder. "Say something."
Seth muttered, "Oh."
