Winona practically sprinted over and threw her arms around her.
Stella stiffened. Her daughter was a little taller than her now. Curled up against her chest, Winona’s soft hair brushed against her cheek, bringing with it a subtle jasmine scent she hadn't smelled in ages.-
The older Winona got, the more distant she had become. Stella’s eyelashes fluttered. Her fingers, resting rigidly at her sides, moved hesitantly to stroke the ends of Winona’s hair.
But a second later, she masked it with a mask of cold indifference.
“What is it? Did someone… bully you out there?”
“N-No.” Winona’s voice was a bit thick. “Who would dare bully me?”
Stella peeled her off. “Then why are you crying?”
Winona’s eyes were rimmed with red, her lashes clumped together.
As the eldest daughter of the house, a fiercely opinionated heiress, Winona had basically never been wronged in her entire life. She was usually the one doing the wronging.
“I’m just getting my period. My emotions are all over the place.” Winona stared unblinking at Stella.
She used to really resent her parents. Her father was far too cowardly, spending his days messing with plants and raising fish at home. Even though he was technically the head of the company, he had handed all the real power over to his younger brother.
And her mother? She spewed nothing but harsh, bitter remarks and threw temper tantrums at the drop of a hat. Everyone gossiped that Stella was mentally unstable and manic.
For example, in her past life, Winona couldn't fathom why Herbert would fall for a completely useless, impoverished girl. She had bravely gone to Stella to vent. Standing a few feet away, Stella had looked her up and down and ruthlessly said, “Why don’t you think about how many people can actually tolerate your atrocious princess attitude?”
From that day on, Winona had never initiated a conversation with Stella again. Not everyone in the world has a loving relationship with their parents, right?
It wasn't until after the bankruptcy, when her uncle Quincy took her in and tried to force her into an arranged marriage with a notorious, twisted billionaire thirty years her senior, that things changed. Winona had been utterly trapped. It was Stella who had stormed the company and set Quincy's office completely on fire, finally creating the distraction Winona needed to escape.
