“Ah!” Zoe cried out in pain. She clutched her hair, feeling like her scalp was about to tear open.
Daniel rushed over in an instant. He grabbed Simon’s wrist and twisted it hard.
“Ahhh!” Simon grimaced in agony and let go of Zoe’s hair. “It hurts! Let go!”
Daniel tossed him onto the floor. He pressed one foot firmly against Simon’s back, pinning him down tight. “Scum like you deserve no mercy,” he said coldly, one word at a time.
“I’m calling the cops.” Simon pulled out his phone and struggled to dial a number.
Daniel kicked the phone away.
“Let me go!” Simon roared.
It was not long before the tattooed gang leader showed up with his men. The broken front door would not close, hanging loosely ajar.
Zoe leaned against the window and stared out into the night. Tears welled up in her eyes.
Beats and cries echoed from the living room. Outside, the night looked calm and peaceful. The sharp contrast felt bitterly ironic.
The saddest part was Sally. She begged the gangsters to stop.
“Stop… please stop… you’ll kill him,” Sally cried. She even pulled out her phone to call the police. Daniel stopped her before she could dial.
After the first round of beating, Daniel saw Simon only had minor wounds. He turned to the tattooed man. “Pay off all the interest.”
The tattooed man nodded and gestured at his men.
One thug raised an iron pipe and smashed it hard against Simon’s knee.
“Ahhh!” A brutal scream cut through the quiet night.
Tears blurred Zoe’s eyes. She covered her ears and stared at the moon. Her chest felt tight and heavy.
As the thug prepared to break his other leg, the tattooed man spoke up. “Pay off every cent he owes me, and I’ll make sure he spends the rest of his life in a wheelchair. He’ll never stand

again.”
“Deal,” Daniel agreed.
The thug lifted the pipe once more.

“Stop right there!” A sharp, firm voice boomed from the doorway.

Everyone turned toward the pushed–open door. Iris and Brandon walked in with gifts in their hands. Both froze in shock at the brutal scene.
Iris locked eyes with Zoe. The raw despair in Zoe’s gaze stabbed straight through her heart. She quickly put down the gifts, wanting to rush over and check on Zoe. But rowdy armed thugs blocked her way, their tattoos menacing.
Brandon dropped his gifts on the spot. He pushed past the thug holding the pipe. “Do you people have any respect for the law?”
Simon didn’t recognize the man, but he looked honest, kind, and righteous.
“Help me!” Simon sobbed loudly. “My daughter and her boyfriend hired gangsters to beat me… please save me!”
Her boyfriend?
Brandon glanced at Daniel, then back at Zoe. His eyes dimmed, and anger crept over his face.
He pulled out his phone to make a call, but Daniel warned him. “Stay out of this.”
Brandon lowered his phone. He pointed at the injured man on the floor. “This is Zoe’s father. How could you have people beat him like this?”
Sally suddenly grabbed Brandon’s sleeve and begged, “Please save him. They’ll kill him.”
The tattooed man spoke in a lazy, casual tone. “This guy owes us over 300 thousand. His daughter made the rule: every time he gets hurt, we get paid one installment. If he stays unharmed, the debt waits.”
“You beat him this badly for 300 thousand?” Brandon frowned and took a deep breath, unable to believe what he saw. “Tell me the full amount. I’ll pay every cent.”
Simon’s face lit up with excitement. Sally finally breathed easy, seeing him as their savior.
The tattooed man grinned and pulled out the IOU note.
