Zoe held back her tears and buried her face against Daniel’s shoulder, her voice soft and quiet. “Daniel, if one day I…”
Daniel cut her off right away. “No. Don’t even say it. That day is never coming. Don’t talk like you’re saying goodbye. I don’t wanna hear it.”
Zoe closed her teary eyes and forced a faint smile, pressing herself into his chest. “I’m not saying goodbye. I mean, if I recover fully and get to keep my ovary… I’ll marry you. I’ll have your kids.”
Daniel tightened his arms around her, holding her firmly. “It’s a promise. You can’t break it.”
“I won’t.”
Someone knocked on the door.
Daniel quickly wiped away his tears, and Zoe composed her emotions too.
The attending doctor pushed the door open. “How are you feeling today?”
“I’m doing well.” Zoe kept an optimistic tone.
Daniel asked, “Doc, when is the surgery scheduled?”
“As soon as possible.” The doctor waved the papers in his hand. “But you two need to finalize one thing. Do we keep the ovary or remove it entirely?”
“Remove it.” Daniel spoke without hesitation.
“Keep it,” Zoe said at the exact same time.
The doctor had told them before that keeping the ovary came with huge potential risks. A full removal was the safest and most reliable option. Without an ovary, Zoe could no longer conceive naturally and would age faster.
None of that mattered to Daniel. He simply didn’t care.
But Zoe refused to give it up. She didn’t want to age quicker than Daniel, and she didn’t want to lose her chance of having children.
“Personally, I’d recommend a full removal,” the doctor explained. “But our hospital does have successful cases of high–risk ovarian preservation surgery.”

“Brandon used to be an outstanding obstetrician and gynecologist here. He’s the only doctor who’s successfully performed this complicated surgery. He reached out to me yesterday and asked about your condition. Learning you were about to have surgery, he stayed up all night sorting out old surgical plans, medical journals, and international cases to compile these successful records.”
Daniel and Zoe exchanged a look before flipping through the files.
Reading those successful cases gave Zoe more confidence, and she became more determined to keep her ovary. Daniel also softened his stance. “How is the patient he operated on?”
The doctor pointed at the records. “I heard she has a four–year–old kid now. She got pregnant naturally. Her health is perfect, and she only needs a checkup every three years.”
“Is it possible to let Dr. Whitmore perform this surgery?” Daniel asked anxiously.
“He resigned.” The doctor sounded confident. “I’ve never done such surgery, but he gave me detailed procedures and guidelines. With my experience plus his professional direction, I’m fully capable of pulling this off.”
Zoe gently tugged Daniel’s hand. “Dr. Whitmore has shared his experience and surgical plan to help us. We shouldn’t bother him any further.”
“Alright, whatever you want.” Daniel knew it was inappropriate.
Whether as a friend or as Zoe’s best friend’s older brother, Brandon had already gone out of his way to help.
More importantly, he was married and no longer worked at the hospital. It would be unfair to his wife if he came back just to operate on his old crush.
Zoe asked, “When can we do the surgery?”
“Have you two made up your minds?”
“Yes. We’re going with Dr. Whitmore’s surgical plan.”
“Got it. I’ll arrange the surgery right away. No food or water from this moment onward.”
Zoe nodded. Daniel squeezed her hand tightly, staring down silently with a heavy, worried expression.

Yvette softly pushed open the bedroom door. She stared at Brandon sleeping soundly on the bed, her heart feeling heavy and dull.
He hadn’t come back to their room to sleep until eight that morning, staying up all night for Zoe.
Yvette let out a quiet breath, forcing herself to calm her gloomy mood. She walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, leaning down slightly.
