As long as she never asked and Brandon never brought it up, she would pretend he was over Zoe for good.
Call it self–deception.
What else could she do? She loved this man far too deeply.
Yvette closed her eyes and lay on his warm, firm chest, listening to his steady heartbeat.
“Why’d you stop mid–sentence?” Brandon’s voice sounded low and drowsy.
Yvette quickly changed the subject. “If you’re still tired, go back to sleep. I won’t bother you.”
“I’m awake now.” Brandon gently kissed the top of her hair. “It’s the weekend. Let’s go out…”
Yvette cut him off. “I don’t feel like going out. You should get up and handle your own stuff. Don’t stay up late anymore.”
She pulled herself out of his arms, lowered her gaze, and walked away.
Brandon sensed something was off about her, but he wasn’t sure if he was just overthinking.
He sat up, rubbed his eyes, and took a deep breath.
He’d stayed up the previous night drafting a surgical plan for Zoe. Iris had told him the surgery was scheduled for today, and the doctor recommended a full removal—something Zoe strongly opposed.
Whether it was for a friend or for his sister’s best friend, he’d thought he should help as much as he could.
Brandon got up, freshened up, changed into casual clothes, and headed downstairs.
Cayden sat on the sofa, focused on reading the news on his tablet.
“It’s the weekend. Why is the house so empty?” Brandon glanced around curiously.
Cayden frowned and looked up at him. “Am I not a person?”
“Of course you are.” Brandon chuckled softly. “Where’s everyone else?”
“Iris’s best friend is having surgery today. Iris was worried sick, so she went to the hospital to

wait. Julian went with her. Harper headed over to her grandpa’s place. As for Yvette…” Cayden glanced around. “She was here a minute ago, but I have no idea where she went now.”
Brandon nodded and walked toward the dining room.
He sat down and pulled out his phone to check his messages while the maid set food in front of him.
After replying to work texts, he opened his chat with Yvette and sent a message, “Where are you?”
Yvette didn’t reply. He set his phone aside and started eating lunch.
A little while later, his phone rang.
He put down his fork and answered the call. “Hello?”
“I’ve got good news. The surgery went perfectly. Your detailed plan plus my experience made it flawless. Honestly, I think I did better than you would’ve.”
It was his former colleague, sounding proud and cheerful as ever.
Brandon replied in a joking tone, “Then I have to thank you on Zoe’s behalf for doing such a great job.”
His colleague instantly grew modest. “No, no. I should be thanking you. Without your surgical plan, she and her boyfriend would’ve agreed to remove her ovary.”
“Alright, let’s skip the thanks. As long as she’s safe and healthy, that’s all that matters.”
His colleague sighed emotionally. “Word is they’re planning to get married after this surgery. I wonder if we’ll get an invitation.”
“You might not. But I definitely will.”
Brandon was confident about that. When he’d married Yvette, he’d invited Daniel and Zoe. They’d been traveling back then and couldn’t make it.
“Yeah. Of course you’ll be invited. Happy now?”
Brandon let out a bright laugh and said nothing more.
Not far from the dining room, Yvette stood frozen in place, holding a bouquet of freshly picked flowers.

She stared quietly at Brandon’s back, too scared to walk over.
She was afraid she wouldn’t be able to hold back her emotions.
A sharp, bitter ache surged through her chest.
She couldn’t help wondering what right he had to thank the surgeon for Zoe.
It was true–all that mattered was Zoe’s safety.
But he looked so happy. Had he really been over her?

If he still loved her, couldn’t he at least hide his feelings? Why force her to see it and hurt like this?
Yvette turned away and walked toward the living room.
