Chapter 139 Theo’s Fall

His touch made her breath hitch, the blood draining from her face.

She tried to pry his hand away, but he leaned in closer.

“What did you eat tonight?” Elian asked, his voice low.

Liana shot him a cold glare, her mind racing for an excuse, when Lawrence’s voice cut through the crowd, capturing everyone’s attention.

“Many of you know I’ve been married more than once. Liana is my daughter with my first wife, my eldest child,” Lawrence announced.

The garden fell silent. He stood there, composed and steady, publicly acknowledging Liana as his daughter.

“For years, I didn’t involve myself in their lives. I only saw her mother again this before she passed,” he continued.

Liana stared at him, stunned.

He saw Mom?

year, shortly

“Liana, your mother’s last wish to me was to take care of you, to help with your marriage,” Lawrence said, his gaze finding hers in the crowd.

Liana didn’t know if she could believe him.

Did he really see her mother before the end?

Her mother had never said she wanted to see him, but Liana knew she had. She’d found old photos of them together, carefully preserved.

“Now, I’m delighted to invite you all to my daughter and Elian’s wedding ceremony, on the twenty-eighth of next month.”

With that, Lawrence began to applaud, a proud father celebrating the young couple.

The Locke family beamed with joy.

But for every celebration, there is a shadow.

After his speech, Lawrence scanned the crowd, a worried frown creasing his brow when he couldn’t find Anya.

Liana stood quietly beside Elian, still reeling from the unexpected turn of the evening.

But Elian’s gaze drifted to her lower belly. Liana’s nerves frayed; she couldn’t focus. She cut him off with an icy glare. “You set me up.”

“Yeah. I admit it. I planned all this,” Elian said, his gaze traveling from her abdomen back to her cool, challenging eyes.

He had orchestrated it. He’d laid their relationship bare without consulting her.

Liana was speechless, searching for a word strong enough.

Suddenly, a housekeeper pushed through the crowd, her face pale.

“Mr. Locke! Mrs. Locke! Bad news-Theo fell down the stairs!”

Liana hadn’t even changed out of her evening gown. After borrowing a nurse’s phone to call Lily, she returned to the ward’s doorway and stopped.

Inside was a picture-perfect scene of a family of three. She was the outsider.

“Mommy…” Theo murmured from the hospital bed, his voice groggy.

“Mommy’s here, sweetie. It’s all my fault. I should have watched you better. I’m so sorry, baby, so sorry…” Anya sat by the bed, weeping as she stroked Theo’s bruised face.

“Mommy,” he whimpered, trembling, until his eyes found the man standing beside Anya. A tear rolled down his cheek. “Daddy.”

“I’m here, Theo. You’re okay now,” Elian said immediately, stepping forward to bend over the bed and gently smooth the boy’s hair.

Anya looked up at Elian with tear-filled eyes, then back at Theo. “Daddy and Mommy are right here, sweetheart. Just sleep. We’ll be here when you wake up.”

It was almost a perfect picture.

Liana’s heart ached for the little boy, always so accident-prone. But he had the two people who loved him most watching over him.

She figured going in would just disturb them, so she turned quietly and slipped away.

Just as he’d said two hours ago, their display of affection was just an act.

No matter how grand the proposal tonight, their path still led to divorce.
