Elian gazed quietly at her small, palm-sized face. “Go back to sleep for a while,” he murmured softly.
“What about you?” Liana asked.
She did want to sleep, but wouldn’t he need to go out and stay with Theo?
Theo seemed to need both his mom and dad present to stop crying from the pain.
Elian didn’t reply. Instead, a trace of gentle warmth gradually surfaced in his deep eyes.
Liana felt awkward under his stare and lowered her head to take another sip of water.
Suddenly, a long arm wrapped around her waist from behind. His unexpected touch sent a shiver through her, and she turned to him in surprise.
“I haven’t sung you ‘Happy Birthday’ yet,” he said, his voice low.
“It’s past one o’clock,” Liana reminded him. Her birthday was technically over.
But Elian held her closer, resting his chin lightly on her slender shoulder. “It’s our must-do, every year. Husband and wife stuff.”
“Then sing it.”
Or maybe next year, I won’t be here to hear it.
Her study abroad application had been approved.
“Happy birthday to you…”
He sang the slower, melodic version.
Liana had listened to it often for a period, and he’d remembered.
It was moments like this that made loving him feel inevitable, not some foolish obsession.
He remembered so many of her little preferences.
Liana listened quietly to his low hum, her heart swelling. When the lyrics shifted from “I love. you” to “happy birthday dear…,” she couldn’t help but turn to look at him.
Elian simply held her gently, finishing the song softly.

If they could rewind…
Liana knew she would still say yes to marrying him.
It was he who probably never loved her.
Otherwise, how could he have kept the secret for so long?
Loving someone meant complete trust.
It meant handing over your whole self to that person. That was real love.
“Liana.”
“Hmm?”
“Happy birthday.”
Finally, he met her eyes.
A pang of sadness hit Liana’s heart, yet she found herself smiling faintly. “Thank you.”
It’s probably the last time.

Later, Theo cried again, and Elian immediately hurried out. After he and Anya had soothed Theo back to sleep, Liana also gradually drifted off.
The next morning brought a light drizzle.
When Liana woke up, she glanced out the window above the bed and quietly got up.
Draped over the foot of the bed beside her coat was a man’s jacket of a similar color. Liana paused at the sight, then simply picked up her own.
As she put on her coat, her ring caught on a loose thread at the cuff. She looked at it, then carefully worked the thread free.
And then…
She stared at the wedding band on her finger and the ring he had given her last night during his proposal.
She guessed it was probably an heirloom from his grandmother’s wedding.

Remembering they were about to divorce, she carefully removed both rings and placed them

in the pocket of his jacket.
Yes, both-the one he bought for their wedding and the heirloom.
As for the matching men’s band she had bought for him-well, it didn’t matter now..

On her way out, she saw the two figures asleep on either side of Theo’s small hospital bed. The sight only strengthened her resolve. She left on tiptoe.
Theo opened his eyes and turned his head, catching a glimpse of Liana’s retreating back.
“Ma’am…” he whispered instinctively.
Liana didn’t hear him, but Elian stirred awake. He reached out to feel Theo’s forehead, relaxing only after confirming there was no fever.
“I’ll
go see her off and be right back,” he whispered.
Theo listened and nodded understandingly.
Anya, hearing Elian’s voice, only opened her eyes after he had left.
He went after her. Has he really fallen for Liana?
Regret for rejecting him years ago washed over her, followed by a fierce, silent vow.
I will get him back.
