Chapter 240 Who Else Would the Bride Be?
In her winter coat, she stood before her mother’s heads one.
Finished
They had been each other’s whole world. She’d imagined them bickering even when she was in her fifties. Turns out, they only got twenty-seven years together.
Since her mother’s passing, a cold, hollow ache had taken permanent residence in her chest.
No one truly cared for her anymore.
The people who suddenly claimed family ties now only wanted to drain her, to use her up until there was nothing left.
Liana sat quietly by the grave until noon, then went to the old district.
Roy, though retired, kept busy. When she arrived, a client was just leaving after a consultation.
Seeing him occupied, Liana headed for the kitchen.
He was her only family now. She moved with the familiarity of home, sautéing mushrooms and spinach, making simple scrambled eggs, and toasting some bread.
By the time Roy finished, lunch was ready.
“Getting ready to go abroad?” he guessed as he walked to the table.
“I’ll leave as soon as the divorce is final,” she said, a small, genuine smile touching her lips at the thought.
Roy nodded, pleased to see a spark of lightness in her eyes. “Good. Get away from all this drama. Here, you’ll need this.”
He slid a card across the table.
“What’s this?”
“Elian came to see me a couple of days ago. Said he was just joking about you paying him back. It’s not a real debt.”
Liana was skeptical.
He hadn’t seemed like he was joking.
He’d made it sound like she’d be a deadbeat, humiliating her.
Roy eyed the simple, homely dishes on the table with appreciation. “The Nelson women have always been talented. But a woman doesn’t need to be too capable. Men tend to take it for granted.”
“If only I’d met you sooner,” Liana said with a wistful smile.
Back then, she just believed in paying kindness back with kindness. He treated her well, so she wanted to give back.
She didn’t regret learning to cook for him, but if she’d known how it would end, she wouldn’t have let herself fall so hard.

Every lesson was infused with thoughts of him. The more she learned, the more she missed him. The more she missed him, the more she cooked. Back then, her days revolved around a single hope: his return.
She longed for him to taste her food, to see his approval. She told herself she just wanted him to like her cooking, but she understood now-she had been craving a deeper connection, longing for his love, his commitment, a lifetime together.
She gently pushed the card back toward him. “I’ll ask if need it. I’m careless. I’d lose it, and that’d be bad.”
“You? Careless?” Roy gave her a knowing look.
Liana couldn’t help a small, unguarded laugh. Leaning loser, she confided in a whisper, “When I was little, I constantly lost my cafeteria meal card. My mom scolded me for it all the time.”
After a longer visit, she left at half past one for the Locke Group tower.
She ran into Anya in the lobby.
Anya’s face initially soured at the sight of her, but then calculated smile appeared.
“Liana!
“I was just upstairs finalizing wedding details with Elian What brings you here?” Anya asked sweetly.
“What a coincidence. So am I,” Liana replied evenly, walking past her into the building.
Anya was left speechless, her hands curling into fists. Just you wait, Liana. In a few hours, you’ll vanish from this city for good.
Upstairs, Lucian stopped at the entrance to the CEO’s office.
Yvonne brought in coffee and pastries, then discreetly left. The vast office held only the two of them.
Elian asked her to wait a moment while he finished signing a few documents.
Liana sat on the visitor’s sofa, feeling utterly out of place.
But tomorrow was the wedding.
Her mind conjured an image of his ceremony with Any-him sliding a ring onto her finger, Anya’s radiant joy, his own aloof, almost begrudging expression…
Well, his face was always understated and icy.
