Chapter 54 The Rescue
“What if she refuses?” Anya asked.
“If she refuses a kindness, then she gets what she deserves.”

held no pity for the weakening girl outside.
Outside, Liana heard the groan of the heavy front door opening.
The door was old but stubborn, still ruling this place.

She looked up through the blur of rain to see Anya’s silhouette. Someone held an umbrella perfectly over Anya. Another held an umbrella, and a third carried a bowl.
They moved toward her like emissaries of doom.
“Liana, Grandma and Grandpa had this ginger tea made for you. To warm you up. They promise, if you agree to leave the country immediately, they’ll announce you as the true Forrest heiress.”
Anya stood over her, looking down, voice soft but smug.
The umbrella kept her impeccably dry, a stark contrast to Liana’s wretched state.
Liana fought to lift her head, her eyes meeting Anya’s with cold defiance.
Ginger tea?
To warm me up?
Heiress?
“That tea is more likely to end my life than warm it, isn’t it?” Her voice shook with cold, but not with fear.
“Liana, you’re being paranoid. You’re their blood-they might not like you, but they’d never
you. And hey, if you just behave, I promise you’ll get everything I have. Everything.”

Anya crouched gracefully, the picture of a pampered young lady. The umbrella moved with her, a perfect shield.
Liana was already drenched to the bone.
The housekeeper stepped forward, the bowl held carefully with a cloth. It was steaming.

Anya glanced at it, then stood. “Make sure she drinks it. We can’t have her catching a chill. I’d be heartbroken.” Her tone was sickly sweet.
“Yes, Miss Forrest.” The housekeeper crouched before Liana. “Drink it, miss. It’s good for you. Warms the body.”
The words were kind on paper, but her delivery was flat, cruel.
Liana stared at the steaming liquid. The ginger scent was overpowering, but underneath it, she caught a whiff of something else-bitter, medicinal.
She clenched her jaw, turning her face away.
“If you won’t drink it, you’re wasting the elders’ kindness. That’s poor manners.” The housekeeper pushed the bowl toward her lips,
“Kidnapping and forced medication are crimes for anyone. For a public official’s family, the charges are even heavier.”
Liana’s teeth chattered, but her words were icy.
“Grandpa said if she won’t take the easy way, give her the hard way.”
Anya, seeing her resistance, turned and walked briskly back toward the house.
Rain splashed into the bowl, droplets flicking out. Under the stark glow of the garden light, the scene felt surreal, hopeless.
She felt like the rain itself-about to vanish, silent and unseen.
The man holding her shoulder moved his hand to her jaw, forcing her mouth open.
