“Liana told you I gave her abortion pills?” Anya asked, her voice trembling with wounded pride.

“Anya, no need for us to see each other anymore.”

“She hates me for taking her place in the Forrest family! She’s deliberately poisoning you against me!” Anya grew agitated, playing the part of the grievously wronged.

Elian almost laughed. He stood and picked up Theo.

“You’re so smart. How could you not see she’s slandering me? Elian, where are you going?”

Anya grabbed a fistful of his shirt, desperate to stop him.

Elian’s cold gaze dropped to where her hand clutched the fabric.

“Liana just can’t stand seeing me do well. We’ve known each other since we were kids. Sure, we were apart for a while, but you shouldn’t take her side of the story as truth. I’m being framed.”

“So I’m supposed to take your side of the story instead?” Elian’s voice went icy.

Anya’s strength drained in an instant. She froze, a little dazed.

“Westhaven Estates is off-limits to you from now on.”

With that, he walked out.

Belatedly, Anya realized he was serious and rushed after him.

“Anya, just calm down a second,” Nathan said, stepping in to gently block her path.

“Get out of my way! Who do you think you are?” Anya snapped, shoving his arm aside.

Nathan recoiled, stunned.

They’d known each other for years. He’d always seen her as the epitome of refined grace. This raw, vicious anger was a shock.

Anya saw his reaction and quickly composed herself. “I’m sorry. I’m just so hurt by Liana’s lies. I lost my head.”

“It’s fine,” Nathan muttered, sinking back into his seat, his view of her irrevocably altered.

Anya grabbed her purse, intent on following Elian.

“Anya, there’s something you probably should have known a long time ago,” Xander spoke up, his voice calm.

“What?” She stopped, curious.

“You weren’t Elian’s first choice.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You weren’t the first woman he planned to propose to.”

Anya stared into Xander’s shrewd, perceptive eyes, a cold dread tightening her chest. She refused to believe it.

For two weeks, Liana didn’t see Elian. Then one evening, a car from the Locke Manor pulled up outside the faculty building.

“Mrs. Locke, Mrs. Rosalind Locke sent me to bring you over for dinner,” said the driver.

Liana had just gotten off work with Lily and Quentin. They stepped out together and saw Rosalind’s driver waiting up front.

Since Linda believed she’d lost the baby, someone had been delivering restorative soups to her daily. Though she didn’t want to go, Liana knew severing ties with the family couldn’t happen overnight.

“See you tomorrow,” Lily said, waving goodbye.

Liana nodded and got into the car.

Quentin watched silently as the car drove off toward the Locke Manor, a complex mix of emotions churning inside him.

He knew she wanted the divorce.

But he feared that one moment, one glimpse of Elian, might pull her back.

“Still can’t let her go, huh?” Lily teased, noticing his gaze.

Quentin just gave a resigned smile.

He wondered if Liana would run into Elian at the manor tonight. And if she did…

Yeah, they really would…

Even Liana had no clue what would happen when they met.

As the driver drove through the gates of the Locke Manor, a sleek black sedan overtook them.

“Huh, looks like Mr. Elian Locke’s car. Mrs. Linda Locke called him this morning, and he said he was too busy to come,” the driver remarked.

A knot of anxiety tightened in Liana’s stomach.
