Anya turned and warned, “Jett, I don’t want to hear another word about the past. Liana is Elian’s wife now.”
Jett muttered, “Hmph. They’ll split sooner or later.”
Heavy rain poured all night. Liana stayed by her mother’s bedside in the hospital room, her tears falling silently until they ran dry.
Ever since leaving the club, she’d felt numb. Now, the sleeping woman suddenly reached out and grasped her hand.
Liana leaned in close to her mom and whispered, “Mom? What do you need?”
“I want my girl to be happy.” Jane’s voice was weak.
Tears welled up in Liana’s eyes again, hot and sudden.
Jane tried to wipe them, her movements labored. “Your marriage hit a snag?”
Liana was shocked that her ill mother had noticed. She shook her head vigorously. “No.”
“Silly girl. I carried you for nine months. Liana, whatever the problem is, do what you need to do. Don’t force yourself to endure, understand?”
Jane looked at her daughter’s tear-filled eyes, her own heart aching.
Liana lay her head beside her mother, struggling to keep her voice steady. “Okay.”
“You are my heart, my treasure, the only person in this world I worry about. Even if I die, I’ll be watching over you from heaven. I want you to be happy. I want you to be brave. I want you to keep moving forward.”
Jane didn’t mention her own brief, failed marriage. It wasn’t without regret, but her only concern now was her daughter.
A terrible premonition washed over Liana.
She looked at her mother. Jane was only in her fifties, but already skeletal.
Liana whispered again, “Mom?”
Jane didn’t answer. She seemed to have fallen asleep.
Liana kept vigil silently, issuing a stern warning to herself.
Liana, you will not shed another tear for him.
Tonight’s scene might have seemed like Anya and the of hers mocking her, but the real source of the pain was the man she once loved most.

She would pour her heart into the people who cared about her. She would think hard-once her mom recovered, where would they move?
Her mother loved children. The three of them-her, he mother, and her baby-would be happy.
When the child was older, she’d retake the civil service exam. She would stand tall before that man. She’d make him know that abandoning them would be his greatest…
The next morning, she went to grab some water. When she returned, she saw a crowd gathered outside her mother’s room.
She pushed through and entered.
Medical staff stood solemnly by the bed. They looked at her with heavy expressions.
The water bottle slipped from Liana’s hand and clattered to the floor. She wanted to rush forward, but her body froze in place.
Elian, who had stayed in the parking lot all night, answered his phone. Then he threw open the car door and
ran.
Liana’s world collapsed.
The new drug hadn’t had a chance to be tried. Her mother was gone.
She knelt beside the bed. Tears streamed down her face but she couldn’t make a sound.
Nurses cleared the onlookers from the doorway, though everyone shared in the grief.
The sound of frantic footsteps echoed down the hall. People looked up.
A tall, imposing figure in dark clothes rushed toward the room with terrifying speed. He burst into the space where a life had just ended.
Liana remained kneeling, silent except for the tears.
Elian looked at the still form on the bed and finally slowed his pace.
He approached Liana and lowered his gaze. She looked so fragile, like one touch could shatter her.
He placed a hand gently on her shoulder, afraid of hurting her, yet afraid of letting go. His grip tightened slightly.
Liana wanted to tell him her mother was gone. Her throat moved, but no sound came.
She had braced herself. The multiple critical conditionotices had been warnings. But…
She had wanted just a few more years. At least until her baby was born, so her child could have met their grandmother.
At least until they could leave together, so she wouldn’t be alone…
Suddenly, she didn’t know what to do. It was just her and the baby now.
Soon, staff arrived to take her mother’s body. Her tear-dampened eyelashes fluttered.

In her eyes, these people were like grim reapers, who came to separate her and her mother. She sprang up. clinging to the lifeless form. “You can’t take her! Don’t take my mom!”
She began to tremble, to sob. She looked at them with pleading eyes. “Please don’t take her. Please.
“Liana. Calm down.”
Elian’s voice was firm. He gently but firmly pried her hands away, pulling her into his arms and telling her to calm down.
“No! Elian, let me go! Don’t let them take her! Mom… Mom!”
Trapped in his embrace, she could only watch as’a white sheet was drawn over her mother’s face.
She gasped for air, overwhelmed, and then everything went black.
“Liana? Liana!”
She faintly heard someone’s worried voice, but it sounded distant. Then she felt nothing.
The Locke family helped with the funeral arrangement Liana somehow managed to get through it.
After the service, she was brought back to the Locke Mamor. The elders were deeply concerned.
Elian’s mother, Linda Locke, sat beside her, looking at her gaunt face and saying softly, “You must take care of yourself. Don’t let yourself waste away. Your mother would be heartbroken to see you like this, you hear?”
“Yeah,” Liana whispered.
“Oh, my poor Liana. You’ve lost so much weight. It breaks my heart.”
Rosalind saw how swollen and thin Liana’s eyelids were from crying, and how she remained silent and withdrawn. She was deeply worried.
“Grandma, I’m okay.”
Liana leaned against her shoulder, forcing a weak smile.
