In the box were the rice grains, silver sixpence, and dried lavender sprig-all the little trinkets the elders had tucked under their sheets when they’d first moved in together as newlyweds.
Neither of them had much use for the old wedding charms, and the hard bits had always been a nuisance under the sheets, but they’d thought the tradition was sweet, so they’d stashed the whole lot in a box for keeps.
Seeing them now sent a sharp, unexpected pang through her heart. She’d almost forgotten.
She remembered the first time he’d made love to her in this very room, on the bed beside them. She’d been crazy nervous, but she kept telling herself he was her husband, the man who’d father all her kids. So she swallowed her fear and wrapped her arms tight around him.
She thought they’d make it to forever.
She thought if she died, it would be in his arms.
He was the rock she’d lean on for life. With him there, summers wouldn’t feel so hot, and winters wouldn’t feel so cold.
But then…
The baby….
Her fingers curled involuntarily. Tears welled and spilled over, tracing paths down her cheeks as the memories flooded back.
“Liana. Look at me.”
Elian released her waist, cupping her tear-streaked face in his hands, his voice a soft command.
“I don’t want to.” Her voice was thick with tears but stubborn.
She felt so awful she wanted to kick something, but Elian stared into her tear-streaked eyes and suddenly kissed her.
The air around them tightened. Liana had to take the bunt of his sudden, fierce, deep kiss.
“I want you,” he breathed against her lips, his fingers tangling in her hair, his eyes burning into hers.
“I don’t-” she tried to protest, but her resistance only spurred him on. The kiss turned more possessive, more predatory.
Thud.
The box slipped from her hands, hitting the floor.
Rice grains, a silver sixpence, and a dried lavender sprig were scattered around their feet.
Elian tightened his hold, spun them around, and in the next moment, they were falling onto the soft
mattress.

He broke the kiss just long enough to ensure she wasn hurt, then his hand was back at the nape of her neck, forcing her to meet his feverish kisses.
Soon, he felt the fine tremor running through her warm, pliant body. He ignored it, pulling her tighter against him.
“Honey,” he murmured against her skin, his voice rough with need. “Hold me.”
She refused, turning her face away. He buried his face in the curve of her neck, his lips and teeth leaving a trail of sensation.
“Mm…”
Elian immediately stilled, lifting his head to look at he
Liana’s face was pale beneath the flush, tears shining in her eyes. She pressed a hand tightly over her mouth.
Sensing her distress, he rolled off her the moment she pushed lightly at his shoulder. Liana scrambled off the bed and ran to the bathroom.
Linda had been on her way to deliver milk and fruit. She witnessed the tail end of the scene-Liana’s hurried escape-and her mind went blank for a second.
She quietly retreated.
Back in her own room, she turned to David, who was reading the evening paper. “I just had… a wild thought.”
“Hmm?”
“What if Liana never actually had a miscarriage?”
The mere possibility made Linda’s heart race.
“Didn’t she take the pills? Elian told us himself.” David recalled their son’s drunken, grief-stricken confession weeks ago.
“I know, I know. But… what if Liana was so angry about Anya and Theo that she told him she lost the baby? To push for the divorce?”
Linda kept spinning it out.
David considered this, silent.
“What if Anya found out she was pregnant, brought her the pills, said they were from Elian… and Liana just went along with it? To end the marriage?” Linda’s theory poured out.
David was still thinking, his expression thoughtful.
“Say something!” Linda nudged his shoulder impatiently.
Finally, he spoke slowly. “It’s not impossible.”
“I just went to take them fruit. I saw Liana run to the bathroom, holding her mouth. Honestly, from what you know of her, is she the type to terminate a pregnancy lightly?”
