The next day, a fleet of delivery trucks arrived at the lab, unloading crates of imported precision equipment.
Zinnia watched the process, her heart aching for her friend while simultaneously boiling with rage. "What is this supposed to be?"
"You two are married. Half of what he owns should be yours by right, but he acts like he's handing out table scraps. It makes me sick."
Whitley lowered her eyes, her face completely calm. "Once the divorce is finalized, we'll settle these debts."
Now was not the time. She had to endure it—just until the day she cleared her name and could walk away clean.
The day of the industry summit arrived.
The venue was spectacular, crawling with the most influential figures in the medical field. Whitley arrived early, dressed in a sleek, simple business suit. Without an entourage or an assistant, she looked entirely alone.
Just as she approached the entrance, a group of people blocked her path.
Yelena was dressed to the nines in a dazzling, custom-made gown, basking in the compliments of everyone around her.
Whitley’s eyes narrowed slightly. She recognized that dress. She had once asked Clive to buy it for her for a formal event, and he had dismissed it as unnecessary.
Turns out, it wasn't unnecessary—it just wasn't necessary for her.
Standing next to Yelena was Lyanna, projecting the aura of a haughty matriarch. Caleb Nash was there too, along with Clive's cousin, Xander Sherwood. They stared at Whitley with undisguised contempt.
Xander was the first to scoff, looking her up and down. "An undergrad dares to sneak into a summit of this caliber? Whose bed did you have to warm to get a ticket? Your shamelessness is truly impressive."
"You couldn't just play the good little housewife, could you? You had to come out here and parade yourself around. Who exactly are you trying to seduce?"
"No shame whatsoever. I still don't know why the Sherwoods ever let you in."
Lyanna's face twisted in disgust. Whitley was nothing but an embarrassment compared to Yelena. "It's a tragedy that my own flesh and blood is this useless. Doing something so filthy and still showing your face... you're dragging all of us down with you."
She stood firmly on Yelena's side, condemning her own daughter.
Whitley stared at the faces of the people she once loved. It felt surreal. These were the people she had given her heart to, yet here they were, uniting against her, pouring dirty water over her without even asking for her side of the story.
She felt a chilling sense of clarity. In their eyes, she was never truly family. No matter what she did, she was wrong. No matter how much she suffered, she deserved it.
Yelena took a deep breath, playing the perfect saint. "It's fine. I'm not upset. Whitley just wants to be successful. I can mentor her later."
She turned to Whitley with a sickeningly sweet smile. "I'll talk to Clive. How about you come work as my assistant? I promise I'll help you reach the top. Don't feel bad about your lack of degrees—this field really does require natural talent..."
