His Last Command Came Back to Kill Him novel Chapter 136

Clive gave her a fleeting glance, entirely ignoring the ice in her eyes. Turning his attention back to the call, he calmly replied, "Understood. I'll head over as soon as I wrap up here."

He hung up and accelerated, not waiting for Whitley to say a word.

"Pull over," Whitley demanded, her voice void of any emotion.

Clive kept one hand on the steering wheel, resting the other lazily against the window frame. His eyes stayed glued to the road, his tone dripping with nonchalance. "Where to? The place you're renting now?"

"I want to get out." She didn't want to spend another second in his presence.

"Grandma told me to take you home." His voice was flat, the underlying message crystal clear—if he wasn't trying to appease his grandmother, he wouldn't have bothered driving her an inch.

Whitley didn't say another word, keeping her eyes fixed on the blurring city lights outside the window.

When the car finally pulled up to the entrance of her apartment complex, she yanked the door open and walked away without once looking back. There was no hesitation, no lingering attachment.

The moment she stepped inside the building's lobby, the roar of the car's engine echoing behind her proved just how desperate he was to speed off.

Standing in the hallway, Whitley let out a soft, mocking laugh.

If he was in such a rush to fetch Yelena, why even bother putting on this pathetic show for her?

The next morning, the second Whitley walked into the lab, Chisholm approached her, his face dark with anger.

"Last night, Clive took Yelena straight to Mr. Prescott and a few of the lab directors."

Whitley looked up, listening quietly.

"During the medical summit, Yelena failed to convince Mr. Prescott to take her on as a student, and she didn't make the cut for the core project team."

"This time, Clive showed up in person. He didn't ask Prescott to take her as a formal apprentice—just to provide her with specialized technical guidance. He told them that if they agreed, he'd pump a massive amount of funding into the institute and our department. Enough money to fully bankroll several major research initiatives."

Chisholm was clearly fighting to keep his temper in check. "She doesn't have the skills, so she's just trying to buy her way in. She has absolutely zero respect for the rules."

Whitley stayed silent for a moment.

If Yelena couldn't get into this lab, she would just go to a different platform, a different institute.

In this industry, it was only a matter of time before they crashed into each other head-on.

"Don't burn bridges unnecessarily. Just keep it strictly professional."

Her tone was remarkably steady. "She is the person he holds closest to his heart. If he wants to elevate her, we can't stop him, and there is absolutely no point in going to war with him over it."

With the leverage they currently had, they were in no position to go toe-to-toe with the entire Sherwood empire.

Chisholm stared at her in disbelief. "Are you really not angry?"

Anyone else would be foaming at the mouth if a billionaire tried to crush them with sheer capital right on their doorstep. Yet she was entirely, unsettlingly calm.
