His Last Command Came Back to Kill Him novel Chapter 58

Whitley lowered her eyes.

"The divorce is still in process. There are too many things tied up together. It’s complicated. I couldn't just avoid it."

Assets, business connections, family ties. None of it could be cleanly severed with a simple signature.

Chisholm looked at her sharply through the rearview mirror, his tone grave. "You know exactly who Clive is. Divorcing him is not going to be a walk in the park."

"If he decides he doesn't want to let you go, you could fight him with everything you have and still not break free."

She remained silent, fully aware that he was right. She had endured Clive’s ruthless, calculating nature for five long years. She knew what he was capable of better than anyone.

Seeing her quiet down, Chisholm dropped the subject. He reached over and cranked the heat up a little higher. The rush of warm air finally began to thaw the ice in her veins.

His voice softened. "Take it one step at a time. Don't push yourself too hard. Whatever happens, just call me. I've got your back."

Meeting his gaze in the mirror, she gave a small nod. "Thank you, Chisholm."

She exhaled deeply, forcing her chaotic emotions into a neat, locked box. She knew what she had to do. It was time to formally demand a divorce. No more stalling, no more second-guessing, and absolutely no more compromising for the sake of appearances.

The marriage was already dead. All that was left was endless humiliation and suffering. Furthermore, her failing health simply wouldn't allow her to drag this out any longer.

Years of practically living in the lab, pulling all-nighters, and pushing herself to the breaking point had ruined her body. The doctor had given her a strict ultimatum.

Chisholm spoke up again. "The Zenova-01 Dual-Mechanism ADC drug you've been developing is about to enter clinical trials. If all goes well, it'll hit the market very soon."

Her adoptive parents were struggling, Josiah was just getting his business off the ground, and Winona’s medical bills were piling up. She needed the money.

She absolutely refused to let this rotting marriage destroy the career she had sacrificed everything for.

The car pulled smoothly into the upscale neighborhood, parking in front of the house she had shared with Clive since their wedding day.

Thanking Chisholm once more, she pushed the door open and stepped out.

Standing on the porch, she took a steadying breath before punching in the passcode and pushing the front door open.
