Zita hurried out of the kitchen. Seeing Whitley pale and leaning heavily against the wall, she jumped. "Mrs. Sherwood, why are you up? You look terrible, are you feeling unwell?"
"Just my time of the month, terrible cramps. I need to go to the hospital," Whitley said, cutting to the chase. "My car keys are gone. Where's my car?"
Zita pursed her lips nervously. "Ma'am, your car... Ms. Nash took it yesterday afternoon."
"Yelena?" Whitley furrowed her brows. "She took my car? Why wasn't I told?"
"Mr. Sherwood ordered it," Zita said, bracing herself to tell the truth. "It was late yesterday, and Mr. Sherwood wasn't available to drive her. When she mentioned it to him, he told her to take your car, saying you were all family and there was no need to be polite."
The words felt like a bucket of ice water dumped over Whitley's head.
Clive made the call.
Without asking her permission, he gave her car to Yelena. He hadn't even given her a heads-up.
Whitley suddenly laughed.
What did she even count as in this house?
She didn't have a say over her own belongings. With just one word from him, her property became someone else's convenient convenience, and she, the owner, was the last to know.
She had saved up for so long to buy that car.
Was it a gift to Yelena, or just a loan? With him, it was impossible to tell.
Not having a car was incredibly inconvenient, especially when she desperately needed one right now.
Her chest felt tight, like a heavy weight was suffocating her.
Instead of questioning Zita further, Whitley turned to the living room, grabbed her phone from the sofa, and dialed Clive.
It rang for a long time before he answered.
"What is it?" His deep voice came through, accompanied by the faint rustling of papers. He was clearly working, his tone entirely flat.
Whitley closed her eyes. "Clive, did you tell Yelena to take my car?"
"Yes," he replied. "She's your sister. She just needed a ride, it was inconvenient for her to get back last night."
Whitley let out a bitter laugh.
"I need a car right now."
Seeing how much pain she was in, Zita asked if she should call for an ambulance.
Whitley lowered her gaze. That would cause too much of a scene.
She gritted her teeth and called a cab to the hospital instead.
At the hospital.
The doctor administered pain relief.
Casper Thorne came to check on her when he heard she had been admitted.
"You need to come in on schedule. Don't delay your treatments."
Whitley rubbed her temples. "I know."
She was supposed to come to the hospital yesterday, but Clive had dragged her to Esther's birthday party instead.
Then he had abandoned her, leaving her to freeze and suffer through a miserable, exhausting night. And to top it off, he had given her car to Yelena.
