His Last Command Came Back to Kill Him novel Chapter 66

"Don't let something like that cause a rift between you two."

Vivienne chimed in, "Their relationship is perfectly fine. Whenever he's back, they're practically glued to each other."

Whitley lowered her gaze and stayed quiet.

That had been true for their first year of marriage.

But after losing the baby, everything changed.

Or maybe it was after he went overseas and ran into Yelena—he no longer needed his stand-in.

Everything since then, the whole 'perfectly in love' routine, was just an act for the older generation.

Mrs. Weaver suddenly changed the subject, turning to Whitley. "By the way, I heard PurePath Biologics is starting new clinical trials and they're hiring."

"I have a few recent grads in the family with the right degrees. Should I send you their resumes? You can use them however you see fit."

By 'use them,' she clearly meant nepotism.

Whitley smiled politely. "Thank you for the thought, Mrs. Weaver, but I don't really have much influence over hiring at PurePath."

Vivienne quickly smoothed things over. "She's just an assistant. What kind of pull do you expect her to have? She only works because she has too much free time."

Whitley kept smiling but didn't correct her.

This was exactly why she kept her actual senior partner title a secret.

If people knew, she'd be constantly bombarded with favors and job requests.

Navigating the politics of high society was impossible to do perfectly.

As a member of the Sherwood family, every interaction required extreme caution.

The family didn't need her job to boost their prestige.

She didn't want to get tangled in financial favors with these women, nor did she want to leverage Clive's name. Right now, she just wanted to keep her head down and avoid drama.

Meanwhile, at the Foreign Office.

She had grown up struggling, knew the value of a dollar, and never wasted money like this. She was sharp and resourceful.

Whitley, on the other hand, looked sweet and obedient but threw cash around like it was water. A total financial black hole.

He honestly couldn't understand why a man as successful as his boss had married someone as useless as Whitley.

She had no impressive degrees, no real skills, and only knew how to burn through money.

-

Back at the card table, Whitley's chip pile was shrinking rapidly. She was getting crushed by all three of her opponents.

Every hand seemed cursed—she never got the tiles she needed, and every tile she discarded perfectly set up a win for someone else. Before long, she had almost nothing left.

Whitley frowned.

She knew she wasn't good, but she shouldn't be losing this spectacularly.

Were they teaming up on her?
