Mrs. Weaver laughed as she discarded a tile, shooting Whitley a teasing look. "Whitley, darling, your luck is just terrible today. You've lost several hands in a row."
Mrs. Landon chimed in with a hearty laugh. "Oh, it's fine, it's fine! It's just a game. You win some, you lose some. Whitley's family has plenty of money; a few losses are nothing to her."
Vivienne glanced at Whitley's nearly empty chip pile and asked coolly, "Do you need more chips? If you're out, just say so. Keep playing."
Whitley was about to say she was done playing when a familiar, deep voice—laced with a lazy, magnetic drawl—came from behind her.
"Still playing?"
Everyone turned to see Clive standing tall in the doorway. Dressed in a dark suit, his presence was imposing and cold, yet a faint smile touched his lips as he looked toward the table.
Mrs. Weaver's eyes lit up, and she immediately stood to greet him. "Well, if it isn't Mr. Sherwood! What brings you here?"
Clive gave a slight nod and walked over, his tone casual. "I was just passing by. Heard you ladies were here and thought I'd come say hello."
As he spoke, all eyes shifted to the woman standing beside him.
She was wearing a stunning red dress, her figure remarkably similar to Whitley's. Their facial features shared a resemblance, but this woman carried a deliberately softer, more seductive air.
Mrs. Weaver raised an eyebrow. "And who might this be?"
Yelena immediately stepped forward, flashing a sweet, perfect smile. "I'm Whitley's sister, Yelena."
Sitting at the table, Whitley sneered internally. 'Passing by'? She knew exactly what he was doing.
Whitley suppressed a bitter laugh. She knew her cue to leave. She served no purpose here anymore.
She started to stand up, but Clive suddenly caught her wrist. "Sit with me for a bit."
He effortlessly pulled her down onto the sofa next to him, sitting back with completely relaxed posture.
Whitley yanked her hand away, turning to glare at him. "Mr. Sherwood sure has a lot of free time, coming all this way just to watch me lose at cards."
"I do have some free time," Clive agreed. He leaned back, crossing his legs, his eyes resting on Yelena, who was currently laughing brightly at the table. "Thought I'd come watch a novice lose and bring you some backup while I was at it. Your sister is a lot better at working a room than you are."
Sure enough, Yelena was quick, efficient, and exceptionally sweet-talking. Between calling out 'Mrs. Weaver' and 'Mrs. Landon,' she had the older women beaming, and the energy at the table became incredibly lively.
