Just then, a sickeningly sweet, triumphant voice called out from behind, shattering Whitley's thoughts.
"Whitley? What are you doing here? Did something happen? You look so pale."
Whitley slowly turned around.
Yelena was standing a short distance away, bundled in a beige cashmere coat, her long hair draped over her shoulders. She wore a perfectly innocent, gentle smile as she walked closer.
Trailing right behind her was a tall, imposing man - Xander Sherwood, Clive's cousin and the acting head of Marmont Pharmaceuticals.
Xander looked at Whitley and smirked. "I was wondering who it was. Turns out it's just the little gold digger."
He had always harbored a deep contempt for women like Whitley.
In his eyes, she was nothing but a calculating social climber.
She had stolen a man's bed and usurped Yelena's rightful place as a wealthy heiress.
And now that Yelena had returned to the country to work in this industry, Whitley was suddenly popping up everywhere.
Trying to fly up a branch and become a phoenix, without even looking in the mirror to see if she deserved it.
Whitley let out a cold laugh. "I wouldn't expect anything but garbage to come out of your mouth."
Xander scoffed.
She used to be so timid and overly cautious. Where did this sharp tongue come from?
He wondered what kind of new persona she was trying to fake.
"Do you really think you're a big shot now?" Xander sneered. "Yelena just spent two or three days working at PurePath Biologics, and you have the nerve to steal her R&D results and claim them as your own? I guess stealing someone else's man wasn't enough for you. You really have no shame!"
"Why aren't you at home doing laundry, cooking, and serving my cousin? What are you doing out here showing your face? Are you afraid Yelena is going to take your place?"
"Let me tell you, your paranoia won't save you. You'll never compare to Yelena. My cousin loves her, not you."
Every single word was meant to cut deep.
Three years of her blood, sweat, and tears—everything she had fought for—was about to go up in smoke.
Whitley stood perfectly still, her spine straight as an arrow.
Chisholm's expression turned icy. "Mr. Sherwood, you certainly like throwing your weight around."
Xander crossed his arms. "Mr. Vance, I respect your business acumen, but don't let this woman pull the wool over your eyes. Her true nature is incredibly ugly. Don't wait until she stabs you in the back to regret your choices."
"I don't need your input on how I judge character, Mr. Sherwood," Chisholm replied, his tone frigid.
The Sherwoods were unbelievably arrogant.
Yelena chimed in, "Let's stop arguing. It's all just a misunderstanding. I won't pursue this matter legally. After all, Whitley is my younger sister, and as the older sister, I can let this slide."
She looked at Whitley. "Whitley, if you really love this project that much, I'll let you join me. You can be my assistant. I'll personally mentor you in this industry. I promise I'll treat you better than Mr. Vance ever could."
Whitley raised her eyes. "That's rich coming from you. You steal my papers, you steal my research, and you have the nerve to say you're 'letting it slide'? Your so-called forgiveness is just a guilty conscience. You're terrified I'll expose every dirty little secret you have."
