Sinclair POV
Beta Aric is interesting. He is confusing me with his late sister. Based on the expression on his face, you could tell he was close to his sister Iris. My parents gave me up. My adoption papers said I was a single birth. My parents surrendered me. Plus, I was born human. I was turned into a wolf.
Still, I can’t help but imagine what my life would have been like having a brother like Aric. He seems like a pretty stand-up guy. He isn’t mated, but we aren’t mates either. It’s kind of a shame. He is tall, handsome, confident, and he looks strong. He feels like a protector. It would have been nice to feel protected and wanted by someone like him.
Kaia and Isaiah come out, and I stand. Aric, Austin, Rebel, Adrian, and Amber all stand. I looked at Kaia expectantly, and she said, “Titan is doing well.”
I raised an eyebrow, “Titan?”
She smirked, “Isaiah decided I need to carry an oversized son in my belly. He’s bigger than a normal pup at this stage in the pregnancy. So I’m calling him Titan.”
I laughed, “Actually, that’s a kickass code name.”
She smiled smugly at Isaiah, who scowled at me. “Don’t encourage her.”
“Why? It is a good name,” I said with a smirk.
Austin and Rebel chuckled. “I like it too, Isaiah,” Rebel said.
“Can we discuss this later? Kaia and I want to check on Sheri.”
Rebel stepped forward, “I’d like to go with you. After all, she wanted to meet me, right?”
“Yeah, she did. You should come too, Dad,” Isaiah said.
“I’ll stay here and talk to Aric about the security measures. I’ll show him after we leave here, the trouble spots in the pack.”
Kaia smiled, and I saw something in her eyes. I know that look. If she is trying to play matchmaker, she is wasting her time. “Why don’t you both go ahead. Adrian and Amber can wait for us.”
“We can go with them, Kaia,” Adrian said immediately. Amber looked at him, annoyed.
I picked up my laptop backpack, “No need, Adrian. We’re good,” I said, and then looked at Aric, “Shall we?”
He smirked at Adrian, “Sure, let’s go.”
I started walking towards the exit with Aric. I don’t bother to look back. I don’t know why Adrian thinks I need protecting. I don’t. He should pay attention to Amber. She looks delicate anyway.
“So, Sinclair, tell me about yourself,” Aric said.
I shrugged my shoulders, “There’s not much to say.”
He chuckled, “I doubt that. You seem guarded. It means you have a story. My best guess is you’ve been through some shit. So what is it? Broken heart? Shit family?”
“Are you always this incorrectly perceptive?”
“Incorrectly? I doubt that,” he said, and goodness, he has a southern drawl.
“I’m just here to show you what’s needed for security. Consider yourself lucky. My skillset isn’t something you will find every day.”
He chuckled, “Should I get on my knees and thank you, then?”
“No need to kiss my ass. The feet will do just fine,” I laughed. I like this guy. He’s easy to talk to.
He laughed too, “You’re a funny one, too. I like that.”
“Rogues broke through the territory and ambushed her during a battle. She didn’t make it to the safe room on time,” he said, looking down. His eyebrows were furrowed together.
“You must have cared about her a lot. I wish I had had a brother as caring as you seem to have been about your own sister.”
He pulled out his phone. “This was her.”
I looked at the picture, and my eyes widened. I’m looking at me. Same eyes, same nose, same little mole at the base of the neck. I’ve heard of doppelgängers, but this is too exact. I looked at Aric and tilted my head. “It can’t be.”
“My folks only had my sister and me. I was four when they brought her home. My mother was happy, but I remember watching her cry afterward. I never understood it. What if…,” he trailed off.
I shook my head, “No. I was turned. You were born a wolf. I was born human. My parents gave me up. There are records of my adoption paperwork. My mother and father’s names were Cherise and Ronan Clay.”
“Do you have a picture of them?” Aric asked.
“No. I have the records from the orphanage, though,” I said.
I opened my bag and took out the folder. “See for yourself.”
He flipped through the paperwork. “You know, we could just take a DNA test, and that will tell us faster.”
My head is spinning. I’m hyperventilating. I bend over, putting my hands on my knees as tears are overflowing and dripping onto the ground.
“Sinclair, breathe. I’m sorry. I don’t mean to freak you out. It's just that you are identical to my sister. Please don’t be upset.”
I hear his words, but the entire time, my head is spinning. Why didn’t I have a wolf? How was I human if I was born a wolf? How are Cherise and Ronan on the orphanage records, if I may have been a twin? I have more questions than answers. But first, one thing needs to be done. I need to confirm if I’m even related to Aric.
He’s rubbing my back and trying to get me to calm down. I closed my eyes and took deep breaths. Then I stood back up and looked at him. “Let’s get the test done.”
