Aric POV
These past three weeks have been a revelation. Sinclair has shown me there is an unyielding side to her that demands answers and justice. Her way of claiming justice isn’t exactly within the confines of the law. At least human law. It was very generous to let Cherise live, even though she had to fend for herself now. I still think we should have killed her, but Sinclair is right. She has lived years enjoying her life while we both suffered losses.
She could have just divorced Ronan and walked away, but Cherise was vicious to my sister and our family. Now we need to understand who sent rogues on my parents and Iris. It could be a coincidence, but like Sinclair, we find it highly unlikely.
“Aric, do you think the enemy could have come from dad’s side? Maybe we are looking at this all wrong,” Sinclair said.
“It’s entirely possible, but I can’t think of who would want to hurt them. I was very young. It also doesn’t explain Iris, unless the two events are separate and Paul really did hire rogues to kill our sister,” I replied.
“It seems like hiring rogues is a very werewolf thing. Not a human thing. First, most humans don’t know about wolves. Second, hunters know about wolves, but want all of us dead from what I have been able to research.”
She’s right. This has to be from within. What if it is two separate incidents? There is no real way for us to know unless we investigate my father’s background further.
“What can you tell me about the previous pack? Do you remember the name of the pack or the alpha?” she asked.
“I don’t remember much, except that the pack came from the northeastern region. I remember the journey to get to Ironclaw. That is about it, though. I was young.” I said, but then I remembered, “Let’s talk to Isaiah when we get back. There is probably a transfer record we can look at. Being a beta, that all has to be documented.”
“That’s a start. I’ll dig from there,” Sinclair then added, “Let’s haunt Paul. If he was behind Iris’ death, maybe we can get him to confess it himself.”
“Okay.”
We continued our journey back to Ironclaw and fell into easy conversation about Blackstone and some of our favorite memories. Not surprisingly, all of Sinclair’s favorite memories happened after she turned eighteen.
“Do you really not want a mate?” I asked her.
“It’s not that I don’t want a mate, brother,” she began. “It’s that I will likely be mated to someone who knows his history, while I don’t know anything about mine. Between Thalia, Kaia, and me, I’m the only one that doesn’t know where I come from. Not truly. I want to be able to fully explain my story. Not too long ago, I realized I don’t even have a baby picture of myself. Imagine that for a moment,” she said.
I looked ahead, still driving, and thought about it. My sister could have died in any one of those abusive foster homes, and there wouldn’t have even been a picture of her. It makes sense what she is saying. How can she share a story she doesn’t know with her mate?
