His plump mate (Rebel and Austin) by Buchanan novel Chapter 582

Adrian POV

“Why do you look like you are ready to cry?” I asked.

She sighed. “I’m frustrated with the pack right now, Adrian.”

“What happened?”

She looked at me like I was asking the dumbest question on the planet. I mean, I’m sure it’s probably my fault, too, but I can’t fix it if I don’t know what’s going on.

She picked up her fork and took a bite. “You happened, Adrian.”

I raised my eyebrow and waited for her to continue.

“I know you are still grieving. I get it. But when you walked out of the party after realizing I was your mate, the pack looked at it like you were rejecting me. It was public, and even when I returned, you couldn’t greet me. All that meant to the pack is that you don’t think I’m worth respecting as your mate. So now they have taken a liking to treating me coldly and disrespectfully.”

Her eyes watered again, and she looked down, trying to cut her food and take another bite. A wave of guilt washed over me. I am at fault. A ranked member who doesn’t acknowledge his mate would, of course, embolden pack members to shun the rejected. I wasn’t rejecting her, though. I was trying to get my head straight. It was I who needed time.

"Sinclair…I’m sorry. I honestly didn’t think about how it would make you look in front of the pack.”

“I understand, Adrian. It’s just like everyone says. Amber was gorgeous, and I’m not, and now you are stuck with me. I understand you are grieving, and it would probably be easier if you were mated to someone prettier and more interesting,” she sighed.

“Are you insane?” I asked her. Seriously, I’ve always thought Sinclair was attractive. She is very entertaining when she wants to be. Otherwise, she is all business.

She looked at me like she didn’t understand. “You are attractive, Sinclair. I’ve always thought so. You are usually so wrapped up in work that it’s rare to see you having fun. When you do, you’re hilarious.”

She looked at me like I was lying to her. “You don’t believe me?” I asked.

“It’s not exactly easy to believe, Adrian. You certainly haven’t made it easy to believe either,” she responded.

Oh, boy. She has zero confidence in herself. How is that even possible? Rory’s words cut through me again. I don’t know her.

Sinclair finished eating her food, and I stood up. I offered my hand. “Walk with me?”

“I have work to do,” she said, standing up.

“It can wait. Please.”

She sighed again. “Fine.”

Good. This is good. I need to explain some things to her as well, but it will be good for the pack to see Sinclair and me walking together and spending time together. I’m going to fix this without telling her what I’m doing.

As we pass pack members in the dining hall, they are all looking at us. I grabbed Sinclair by the hand, feeling the electric jolts I had once felt with Amber.

Shit. I just thought of her name and felt…nothing. No heartbreak. No tears threatening to come down. No guilt. Just calm.

Sinclair noticed the expression on my face. “Everything okay?”

I snapped out of it. “Yeah. I’m fine. Let’s walk.”

After we walked outside, she bit her bottom lip slightly. It’s adorable the way she wants to ask something, but looks nervous. She was a hitman. She is a ruthless killer. A fucking genius on a computer, and she is nervous to ask me a question.

‘Maybe because you haven’t given her any confidence to ask you questions. Talk to her, damn it!” Thor yelled in my head.

I decided to ask her about herself then. “So, we’ve spent time together, but it’s always been work stuff. What do you do when you are not working?”

“Sleep,” she said with a humorless laugh. “I’m always working. I try to find things to keep me entertained while I work.”

“Like what?”
