Adrian POV
“Son of a bitch,” Aiden said. He reached for his phone and called Isaiah.
“Brother, what’s up?”
“Candy snuck onto our pack borders and destroyed Sinclair’s things,” Aiden said in a deathly tone.
Isaiah snarled. “I’m coming now.”
They hung up, but I’m the only one confused. I know Candy was a bully towards Sinclair, but I’m clearly missing something.
“Can someone fill me in?” I asked.
Aiden ignored me for a moment. “Sinclair, access all other security footage around the pack. I want to know how she got in.”
Sinclair was already clicking away, and Thalia was behind her, observing the screen. I turn my attention back to Aiden and pull him aside. “Explain. What am I missing?”
“What do you know?”
“Sinclair told me about her foster families. The Crosses were the last ones. She said that her father sat around collecting the checks, neglected her, and allowed his asshole son to treat her like a servant, while doing nothing about Candy’s bullying. She said that Candy made her starve in high school, stealing her lunch or lunch money.”
Aiden looked at me seriously. “You don’t know what happened a few months ago?”
“No. She didn’t tell me.”
“Conrad, her foster dad, was withholding her adoption records and her mother’s keepsake. The necklace with the Purple Atlantonite. She went to the house with Isaiah, because Kaia was in the hospital. She wanted to get the records and leave. Conrad and his asshole son tried to rape Sinclair.”
“WHAT?!”
“Sinclair beat the hell out of them. She grabbed the records and the keepsake, left the house, but dropped the keepsake. Candy caught her off guard and stabbed her in the stomach. She was still a new wolf. She was bleeding out everywhere. Candy was knocked out, and Isaiah had to rush her to the hospital to get blood.”
I looked at my mate. She is sitting calmly, typing away. Her eyes are angry, but the rest of her is focused. She could have died months ago because of that bitch. Now she found her way into the pack, and without detection. How is that even possible?
“I got it. The downed tree, Adrian,” she said. “It was close enough to the fence for her to jump over. She is moving like a hitman.”
Thalia then spoke up. “Do you think she got recruited?”
“It’s possible. I don’t know what kind of skills she possesses, though. All she knew how to do was be a bitch.”
My lips twitched at the sarcasm in her voice. It’s not a laughing matter, but Sinclair in this state can be amusing.
“I’ll have guards take that tree down now. Any idea how she evaded detection?”
Sinclair shook her head. “Not from what I can see. There is something else going on here. At least it wasn’t the pack members being assholes with me.”
“Do you regret it?” I asked. “Because I don’t,” I added quickly.
“No. I don’t regret it. I’m just saying, everything with us has been painfully slow. You were, and I imagine, you still are, grieving. I’m used to being left alone. Opening up isn’t my strong suit,” she said.
She’s been isolated. The abuse forced her into silence. That’s why she doesn’t speak up for herself. I grabbed her and kissed her again.
“Why don’t you buy yourself clothes?” I asked, wanting to understand.
She shrugged her shoulders. “Jeans and T-shirts are my unofficial uniform. I’ve never had a reason to dress up. I can count the times I needed to dress up on one hand, Adrian. The clothes are clean, they fit, and I wear them through until they are damaged. It’s how I grew up.”
“That’s not your normal anymore, Sinclair. I’m going to ask Thalia and Kaia to go shopping with you. I want you to go crazy,” I said, encouragingly. “I want you to feel comfortable, but I also want you to look at yourself as someone who is worth it, because you are.”
Her cheeks blushed a furious red. Thor said that Sinclair doesn’t know how to ask for what she wants. I’m going to bring it out of her.
“Why are you blushing? Are you embarrassed?”
Her eyes fill with unshed tears. “No one has ever told me I’m worth it before.”
Goddess, the mental and emotional abuse my mate has suffered is embedded in her brain. Ronan took her from her family and threw her into a den of animals that tried to destroy her value. I am going to kill that fucker. He ruined her entire childhood.
I kissed her again. “You are worth so much more than you realize, Sinclair.”
