A week later.
“Slowly, Josh. Don’t push your leg too hard.” Althea steadied her son’s small shoulders as he sat in a bright blue wheelchair.
Josh winced, then offered her a faint smile. “Mom, I’m fine. It’s just a broken leg, right? The doctor said I’ll be able to walk again. He also said everything’s already been fixed properly.”
Standing beside them, Chase leaned closer. “That’s true, but it’ll take time—and therapy—before you can walk normally again. No rushing it. You remember what the doctor said, don’t you?”
Josh gave a reluctant nod, his eyes drifting to his leg wrapped in a stark white cast that reached his knee. “I just can’t wait to walk on my own again, Daddy.”
Chase’s expression softened at the boy’s frustration. “Patience, champ. Okay?”
It had been a week since Josh was declared out of danger after the accident that nearly cost him his life. His leg might be broken, and a long cut still marked his head, not to mention the bruises left by the crash, but he had survived. When he finally opened his eyes in the ICU, there had been no alarming complications. Against all odds, he was recovering well.
His post-surgery progress had been smooth, too—except for the broken leg, which demanded therapy if he wanted to run and play again like before.
“All right… I’ll be patient.” Josh’s smile wavered but held. “It’s just… I miss Leo and Nyu.”
Chase tapped a finger lightly against his forehead, amused. “All right then. I’ll ask Granddad to bring them for you.”
“Really?” Josh’s gloomy expression lifted in an instant, his face brightening with excitement.
“Yes. I’m sure Granddad won’t mind.”
“Is Granddad coming back soon? I wasn’t done playing with him last time.”
Three days earlier, Daniel and Riana had visited. They arrived before Josh regained consciousness after surgery but hadn’t been able to stay long. Urgent matters had forced Daniel back to SunCity, while Riana remained behind to support Althea. During that brief visit, Daniel had sat by Josh’s bed, teaching him how to play an online game popular with kids his age.
“Of course he’ll come again.” Chase chuckled. “Didn’t he tell you? He’s staying nearby for now, so he can be with you until you’re fully recovered.”
Josh nodded eagerly.
“That’s why you can’t give up. Keep listening to the doctors, do your therapy, and you’ll get there.”
“Promise.” Daven’s smile warmed as he ruffled Josh’s hair carefully, mindful of the bandage still wrapped around the back of the boy’s head. The doctor had warned them—even if the wound seemed small, the internal bleeding had been dangerous, nearly costing Josh his life. Add to that the serious fracture in his leg, and it was no wonder the doctors insisted he remain under close watch.
Althea exhaled slowly, relief softening her voice. “What matters most now is that you don’t move around too much. Both your head and your leg still need time to heal.”
“Okay, Mom,” Josh agreed cheerfully. Then his gaze flicked back to Daven, eyes bright. “Oh! Mr. Handsome, didn’t you promise you’d come with Grandma today? Where is she?”
Daven hesitated, his eyes drifting toward Althea with quiet caution. He had already told her—ever since Josh woke up, both Kate and Felicia had been eager to see him. Not to reveal who they really were, but simply because their longing to make sure Josh was all right was impossible to ignore.
Althea and Chase had finally agreed. After all, without Kate’s help, Josh might not even be alive. And Felicia… she had done things that Althea still struggled to understand, almost as if she’d turned into an entirely different person.
Yet one thing was undeniable—Felicia and Kate truly cared for Josh.
“Um… Grandma came with someone else,” Daven said gently. “Would you mind meeting them?”
Josh tilted his head, curiosity lighting up his face. “Who is it?”
