**Shadows of the Past – By Emma Clarke**
**Chapter 362**
Cale leaned forward, his brow furrowed in concentration as he studied the documents spread out before him like a puzzle waiting to be solved. “I heard you know her, Chris?” he inquired, his voice steady yet laced with urgency.
Chris, his gaze fixed on a photograph resting on the table, picked it up delicately as if it were a fragile relic from a time long past. “When I first laid eyes on this picture,” he began, his voice trailing off momentarily as memories flickered at the edges of his mind, “it didn’t ring any bells. But… during our conversation at the restaurant, when she brought it up again, fragments of recollection began to resurface.”
Cale’s eyes narrowed, a mixture of skepticism and curiosity swirling within them. “You’re certain she was Chase’s girlfriend?”
Chris hesitated, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. “I honestly don’t know,” he admitted, his tone tinged with uncertainty. “You know Chase—he rarely gets involved with women. They were close once, yes, but I can’t shake the feeling that it was never serious enough for them to have a child together.”
Cale pressed further, his voice insistent. “Are you absolutely sure?”
“Yes. One hundred percent sure. But…” Chris paused, the weight of unspoken thoughts hanging in the air between them.
“For heaven’s sake,” Cale interrupted, his impatience evident. “Just say it plainly, Chris. This isn’t a trivial matter. A child is here, right in front of us, being claimed as Chase’s offspring—complete with all the bizarre circumstances surrounding her existence. We need to keep our wits about us and avoid making any missteps.”
Nathan, who had been silently absorbing the tension in the room, finally spoke up. “Cale’s right,” he agreed, his voice calm yet firm. “Try to recall exactly what their relationship was like back then.”
Chris exhaled a long, shaky breath, the weight of the situation pressing down on him. “I’ll find out the answers. I have to.”
Cale held Chris’s gaze for a moment, understanding that this was not a matter that could be resolved hastily. “I’ve already contacted Detective Aaron. We need a thorough investigation into this.”
Nathan placed a reassuring hand on Cale’s shoulder. “Whatever decision you make, I’m here to support you,” he affirmed. “And what about the inquiry into Kate’s accident? Any updates on that front?”
Cale shook his head slowly, disappointment etched across his features. “Not yet. But Harold’s release from prison was confirmed two weeks ago. He’s been spotted back in his hometown, along with his son—the one we suspected might have been involved.”
“What about the car Kate was driving? Was there really a system failure?” Chris interjected, his voice tinged with concern.
Cale leaned back in his chair, the tension in his body palpable. “Everything checked out fine. No issues were reported. The loss of control and the heavy impact on the right side and front were entirely due to the collision with the truck.” He could feel his dissatisfaction growing, the conclusion feeling far too neat for a situation so chaotic.
“So… he wasn’t involved at all?” Chris’s voice was laced with doubt, his brows knitting together in confusion.
“I don’t know,” Cale replied, frustration seeping into his words. “But something tells me he’s behind all of this.”
