Lauren replied, “Not at all. Mr. Brooks is out of town for a few days, so my workload is light. Actually, it’s a good opportunity for me to learn from you.”

She added, “Mr. Brooks mentioned that you are really impressive. I don’t know much about computers- would you mind if I asked for your advice sometimes?”

Jasmine smiled. “Of course. But please, no more ‘Ms. Thorne’. We’re coworkers now. Just call me Jasmine.”

Lauren paused briefly before saying, “Okay.”

Jasmine finished organizing her documents and got ready to leave for the day. She figured if she didn’t head out, Lauren probably wouldn’t either.

Just as she was about to start her car, her phone rang.

The caller ID showed it was the police station.

That number always stirred up uneasy memories for Jasmine.

The last time she’d gotten a call from them, her mother had passed away.

This time…

After a moment’s hesitation, she answered.

“Hello, is this Jasmine Thorne?”

Jasmine replied, “Speaking.”

“This is the Rivercrest Police Department. Your younger brother is here with us. Can you come down?”

Younger brother?

Hugh?

Jasmine replied coolly, “I’m sorry, I don’t have a younger brother.”

There was a short pause on the other end. “Isn’t Hugh Thorne your brother?”

Jasmine’s tone was firm. “I’m no longer associated with the Thorne family. He isn’t my brother. If there’s an issue, please contact his legal guardian directly.”

The officer sounded slightly annoyed.

“He’s insisting we call you. He says you’re his sister.”

Jasmine frowned. “I’m not.”

The officer’s voice grew impatient.

“Look, here’s the situation. Your brother was involved in a physical altercation and is here giving his statement. You really need to come down. Don’t make this harder than it has to be.”

Jasmine arrived at the police station.

From across the room, she spotted Hugh slouched in a chair, his face bruised and swollen. For a second, she felt almost disoriented—it had been so long since she’d seen him that she’d nearly forgotten she had a

brother at all.

She walked over.

Hugh glanced up and smirked.

“Knew you couldn’t stay away. Knew you’d come.”

Jasmine crossed her arms. “Did you forget? I’m not part of the Thorne family anymore. Your mother made sure of that. Why did you give them my name?”

Hugh touched the purple mark on his forehead.

“That was between you and Mom, not you and me. I never kicked you out. You’re still my sister.”

Jasmine’s eyes shifted to the guy sitting a few chairs away. He looked just as beaten up-seemed like they’d both given as good as they got.

“What happened?”

Hugh shrugged lazily.

“Ran into him at a bar. He was running his mouth. I didn’t like his attitude, so things got physical.”

“You threw the first punch?”

Hugh looked utterly unbothered.

“Yeah. I held back longer than I should have, honestly.”

Without warning, Jasmine kicked him hard in the shin.

Hugh yelped. “Damn, that hurts! My leg’s already bruised up!”

Jasmine didn’t spare him another glance. She turned and walked toward the other young man.

He appeared to be around Hugh’s age. Dried blood was caked at the corner of his mouth, and he hadn’t even bothered to wipe it off.

Jasmine stopped in front of him. “Did he hit you first?”

The young man looked up. A flicker of surprise passed through his eyes-she had a striking presence, and

he hadn’t expected someone like her.

He answered flatly, “Yeah.”

“Why did he hit you?”

He shot a cold glance toward Hugh. “Ask the cops. I’m not repeating myself.”

Okay, tough guy.

Jasmine kept her voice even. “I’d like to hear it from you.”

After a few seconds, he relented.

“He was harassing one of the waitresses. I called him out on it. He didn’t like that, so he swung first.”

Harassing a waitress.

Jasmine felt a cold pinch in her chest. So this was the fine son Eleanor had raised.

She studied the young man a moment longer. He looked tired and worse for wear, but his sharp, stubborn, even defiant.

“What do you do for work?” she asked.

He lifted his head, irritated. “Why does that matter?”

Jasmine offered a faint smile. “Just curious.”

He looked away. “None of your business.”

Unfazed, Jasmine went to speak with the officer handling the case.

eyes were clear,

The officer explained that the two had already agreed to a settlement. All that was left was paying the fines, signing the release forms, and taking them home.

Jasmine pointed toward the stranger. “What about him? Is anyone coming for him?”
