Chapter 248 Choosing Sides
Chapter 248 Choosing Sides
Jasmine tuned out the noise buzzing in her ears, signed the paperwork, and paid the bail.
The officer had lost patience with Hugh’s outburst and snapped at him.
“Go sit over there and keep quiet. Make another sound, and I’ll lock you up right now.”
Jasmine didn’t miss a beat. “Go ahead and lock him up. Save everyone the trouble.”
The officer just shook his head.
Clearly, these two weren’t on good terms.
Seeing Jasmine was about to walk out, Hugh switched to begging.
“Come on, I’m your brother. Are you really leaving me here?
“Don’t ditch me like this.
“I know I messed up. Next time I’ll do better-I swear.”
Jasmine didn’t even glance his way.
Change?
Yeah, right.

It hadn’t even been that long, and he was already back for the second time. Who knew what he’d pull next? Maybe a few nights in a cell would actually do him some good.
She didn’t soften her tone.
“Go call your mom. And don’t dial my number again-otherwise she’ll start saying I’m after something, or that I’m trying to get my hands on the Thorne money.”
Hugh put on a pitiful face.
“Last time I got arrested, she was so mad she slapped me around. Said if it happened again, she’d cut me off from the family money for good.
“I can’t let her find out-I’ll be finished. She might even disown me.”
Jasmine replied coolly, “Don’t worry. She won’t disown you. You’re her only son. If you die, who’s gonna carry her ashes someday?”
She walked over to the young man waiting nearby.
“I covered your fine. Let’s go.”
He looked up. surprised.

Jasmine offered a slight smile.
“You’d rather stay?”
He straightened his torn shirt and said flatly, “I’ll pay you back.”
Then he turned and headed out.
Outside the precinct, the night was cold, and the wind bit through layers.
Jasmine tugged her coat tighter.
The young man stood near the curb, dug into his pocket, and pulled out an empty cigarette pack.
He crumpled it and tossed it on the ground in frustration.
Jasmine picked it up and threw it in a nearby trash can.
“Come on. I’ll get you something to eat and some clean clothes.”
He gave her a suspicious look.
“What’s in it for you?”
Jasmine’s expression softened.
“Nothing. Just saying thanks.”
“For what?”
“For helping me rough up that kid. You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that.”
That caught him off guard.
Isn’t he your brother?”
Jasmine let out a low laugh.
“Biologically, yeah. Otherwise… not really.”
He frowned slightly.
“That complicated?”
Jasmine shrugged. “So, what do you say?”
He thought for a moment.
“Get me a pack of smokes first.”
“Deal.”

Jasmine went into the convenience store next door and bought a pack.
After paying, she hesitated, then grabbed a whole carton.
Back outside, she handed it over.
“I can’t stand the smell of smoke, so don’t light up in my car.”
He stared at the carton for a few seconds.
“Didn’t have to get the good stuff. Cheap ones would’ve been fine.”
Jasmine raised an eyebrow. “You coming or not?”
It was freezing, and all he had on was a thin jacket over a short-sleeve shirt.
He stepped aside, lit a cigarette, and took a few long drags.
After tossing the butt on the ground, he paused, walked back, picked it up, and dropped it into the trash.
Jasmine watched, a small smile touching her lips.
She took him to a diner that was still open.
The young man was clearly starving. He wolfed down a large burger combo and a side of loaded fries.
Once he finished, his gaze drifted to Jasmine’s half-eaten meal sitting before her.
“Not finishing that?”
Jasmine smiled. “The portion was too big. Couldn’t handle it.”
He pulled the bowl toward him, picked up his fork, and started eating.
Jasmine blinked. “I already ate from that.”
He didn’t look up, voice low.
