"I don't think so," Winifred said with a smile. "I have faith in the hospital's leadership."
"That's good," Monica said. "If there's anything you can't handle, you can tell us or Yvan."
Yetta added, "That's right. Don't worry about anything and just focus on recovering. If you need anything, just have Yvan do it. You're friends, after all. It's only right that you look out for each other."
Winifred nodded awkwardly.
If they knew about her and Yvan's history, or that he was pursuing her now, would they still be so kind to her?
Winifred clenched her hand slightly, feeling even more certain that she needed to leave Zion and get far away from Yvan.
"By the way, Mrs. Brown," Winifred said, "now that I'm injured, I won't be able to work for a while. I'm afraid I won't be able to handle your follow-up treatments personally. You might need to find another doctor. I'm really sorry about that."
In reality, Monica's implant procedure wasn't for another month, by which time Winifred's injuries would have healed. But she was planning to resign after the holidays.
It was best to sever any remaining ties with the Brown family.
Monica comforted her, "Don't worry about it. I can find another doctor for the rest of my treatment. Don't feel guilty."
"Do you have another doctor in mind? I can put in a good word for you and have them take special care of you," Winifred offered.
Monica patted her hand and smiled. "No need. Since you can't treat me, I'll just have an acquaintance of mine do the implants."
After a few more words of concern, Monica and Yetta got up to leave.
After they left, Winifred felt a little dazed.
Yvan's family was actually quite nice. They didn't look down on her because of her humble background.
They probably really did see her as a friend.
She also genuinely liked Mrs. Brown, Yetta, and Murphy.
But she knew her place. No matter how much Mrs. Brown liked her, she would never let Yvan marry her.
