The door was unlocked. He stepped inside.
In the faint light filtering in from the balcony, he saw that the bed was empty.
A bad feeling crept into Yvan's heart. He switched on the light and searched the room, but there was no sign of Winifred.
He pulled out his phone to call her, but it went straight to voicemail.
Yvan's chest tightened with a sudden panic.
Had she left? Had she just walked away without a word?
A profound sense of loss washed over him.
Before he left, she had given no indication that she was planning to leave. Why had everything changed by the time he got back?
Was she upset that he had gone back on his word? He had said he would stay at his parents' house but ended up staying here. Was she angry about that?
Or was it something else?
Yvan opened the security camera app on his phone.
He rewound the footage and saw Winifred leaving at 3 PM.
She was only carrying her small purse, no luggage.
After that, there was no sign of her returning.
What about her luggage?
Yvan shot up and threw open the closet door.
Thank God. Her clothes were still hanging there quietly.
So she hadn't taken her things. That meant she hadn't planned on leaving for good. She had just gone out for something.
But she left at three, and it was now past six. Why wasn't she back yet? And why was her phone off?
Yvan's heart twisted again. He was terrified that something had happened to her.
Could Zebulon have gotten desperate and done something to Winifred?
