Winifred snapped, “Yvan, who are you to judge anyone else? You’re hardly a saint yourself, with a woman on each arm. One minute it’s Teresa, the next it’s someone else.”

“So you did notice,” Yvan mocked. “I was starting to think you couldn’t even see me.”

“This place isn’t that big. Anyone with eyes could see,” Winifred said, her anger a thin veil for the panic fluttering in her chest.

Yvan’s lips curled into a smirk. “If he and I are so alike, why did you choose him? You might as well come back to me. We’ve already been to bed, after all. We know each other inside and out.”

Humiliated and furious, Winifred raised her hand to slap him, but Yvan caught her wrist before it could connect.

“What, trying to hit me for a third time?” Yvan chuckled.

She swung with her other hand. Yvan, holding a cigarette, was forced to let her go to block the blow.

As she came at him with both hands, he fumbled for a moment before sticking the cigarette between his teeth, grabbing each of her wrists with his now-free hands.

Her face flushed, Winifred struggled fiercely, but Yvan held her wrists in a vice grip. He refused to let her break free.

As they were locked in their struggle, the sound of high heels clicked around the corner, followed by Teresa’s voice.

“Yvan, where are you?”

Yvan quickly pulled Winifred into a nearby room, shutting the door and locking it.

Furious at being manhandled, Winifred opened her mouth to scream, but he clamped a hand over it before she could make more than a sound.

Outside, Teresa seemed to have heard something. She walked over, her expression puzzled, and knocked on the closed door. “Yvan, are you in there?”

Inside, their position was dangerously intimate.

Yvan had Winifred pinned against the wall, one hand securing her wrists while the other covered her mouth.

Honestly, it wouldn't have been a big deal if Teresa saw them, but he couldn’t resist using this as an excuse to be close to her.
