Later, when Todd asked Yvan about it, Yvan explained there was a party and one of the girls chasing him was there, so he’d specifically called Winifred to play her part.

During their sophomore year of college, Todd invited Yvan on a beach trip.

The beach was on his family's private property, so there would be no outsiders.

To his surprise, Yvan brought Winifred along, and they even shared a room.

That really threw Todd and Simon for a loop. They kept shooting Yvan looks, trying to ask him what was going on.

But Yvan pretended not to notice.

Winifred and Yvan were inseparable the whole time, so they couldn't exactly ask him in front of her.

Finally, the next morning, Yvan came out for breakfast alone.

Todd and Simon both gave him a teasing look.

“So, Yvan, where's Winifred? How come she’s not joining us for breakfast?” Simon asked.

“She’s not feeling well. I'll bring something to her later,” Yvan said, his expression unchanged.

“Not feeling well?” Simon's eyes lit up with gossip. “Yvan, don't tell me you two...last night...”

Yvan kept his eyes down, cutting his steak. “Just say what you want to say.”

Seeing that he wasn’t denying it, Todd asked in shock, “Yvan, you didn’t actually make things real with Winifred, did you?”

Yvan remained noncommittal.

Todd and Simon exchanged a look.

He never expected that, seven years later, he would hear the name Winifred from Yvan’s lips again.

“What about Winifred?” Todd asked quickly.

“...She's married,” Yvan said, his voice laced with pain as he propped his head up. “She married another man. They even have a child.”

“What? What does her being married have to do with you? Didn't you two break up seven years ago?” Todd found it incredible. “Yvan, don't tell me you're still hung up on her.”

Yvan didn't speak, just picked up his glass and downed it again. His silence said it all.

“Seriously? You’re still in love with her?” Todd was incredulous. “What kind of spell did Winifred cast on you that you’re still obsessed with her after seven years?”

Yeah, what kind of spell had she cast on him? Seven years, and he still couldn't forget her.

Yvan stared blankly at the swirling liquid in his glass as scenes from the past flooded his mind...
