Winifred also thought about the cake.
Before, she had thought it was a coincidence, but now it seemed highly likely that Yvan had instructed Fitch to give her the cake on that specific day.
And the concert.
How could Fitch have so conveniently gotten tickets for her favorite artist?
So Molly, too, must have been sent by him to get close to her.
Winifred clenched her hands tightly.
…
Rena was arrested for assault. Yvan refused to settle privately, so Rena was facing not only compensation but also a possible prison sentence of six months to a year.
She finally panicked and called Steven, begging him to ask Winifred for mercy on her behalf.
Steven refused outright, but the next morning in the break room, he stopped Winifred.
“Winifred, I heard about what happened last night. I’m so sorry.”
Winifred didn’t know how to face him.
She couldn’t say she didn’t blame him, because this whole mess started because of him. But she couldn’t say she blamed him either, because he wasn’t the one who did it.
If they were just ordinary colleagues, she would definitely keep her distance and never speak to him again. But he had helped her get the job and had been a great help with her promotion. She couldn’t bring herself to turn against him.
After a pause, Winifred finally said, “You’re not the one who did it, you don’t have to apologize.”
“But Rena did this to you because of me. I’m really sorry. Were you hurt last night?”
“I’m fine, but the person who got burned saving me is the one who’s really suffering. If you really feel sorry, you should go see him.”
Steven felt a pang of disappointment at her lukewarm attitude. “Winifred, I’m truly sorry. Is the person who saved you a friend of yours? I’ll go visit him.”
“He’s my ex-boyfriend. He’s in the burn unit at our hospital. You can go see him if you want.”
Ex-boyfriend? Steven was taken aback.
Without waiting for him to say anything else, Winifred got up and left.
Fitch hung up, his face grim. “Mr. Brown, Molly thinks Ms. Spencer knows something. Ms. Spencer hasn’t spoken to her all day.”
Yvan fell silent.
Did she already know? Was she furious?
“Mr. Brown, maybe we should just confess everything to Ms. Spencer?” Fitch suggested cautiously. “You didn’t do all this to hurt her. And you saved her. I don’t think Ms. Spencer will blame you.”
She wouldn’t blame him?
Yvan felt a bitter ache in his heart. Fitch didn’t know the whole story, so he thought Winifred wouldn’t hold it against him. But he knew. He knew Winifred must be furious right now.
She must think he was back to pestering her again.
Just then, there was a knock on the door.
Fitch went to open it. When he saw it was Winifred, his face lit up.
So Ms. Spencer did care about Mr. Brown after all.
