As a doctor herself, Winifred knew that an infected wound was no small matter. If bacteria entered the bloodstream, it could cause sepsis and be fatal in an instant.
Her brow furrowed. She didn't say she would go, nor did she say she wouldn't. She simply turned and went back to her apartment.
Fitch: “…”
Was all his effort for nothing?
Sighing, Fitch returned to the apartment next door, grabbed a few essentials, and headed out, ready to go to the hospital. But as soon as he opened the door, he found Winifred standing there.
“Are you going to the hospital now?” she asked.
Fitch quickly replied, “Yes, I am.”
Winifred said, “I’ll go with you. I’ll go see him.”
Fitch was stunned for a moment, then overjoyed. “Great! Let’s go, Ms. Spencer.”
In the car, Fitch did his best to speak up for Yvan. “Ms. Spencer, I don’t know what happened between you and Mr. Brown that makes him so afraid to face you. But as an outsider, I can truly see how much he cares about you. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been willing to get burned just to save you. You have no idea, these past few days, he’s been like a wilted flower, just staring at your photos or your messages. It breaks my heart to see it.”
Fitch glanced at Winifred’s expression in the rearview mirror. Seeing that she remained indifferent, he couldn't help but wonder.
What on earth did Mr. Brown do to make Ms. Spencer so unmoved even in this situation? Could he have cheated on her? He couldn’t think of anything else.
The apartment wasn't far from the hospital, and they arrived quickly.
Fitch pushed open the door. Yvan was lying on the bed with his eyes closed. He didn’t open them at the sound of the door, assuming it was either Fitch or a doctor or nurse. It definitely wouldn't be her.
“Mr. Brown, look who’s here to see you! It’s Ms. Spencer,” Fitch announced cheerfully.
Yvan’s eyes flew open, and he pushed himself up.
A sharp pain shot through his back from the movement, but he gritted his teeth and forced a smile. “Winifred, what are you doing here?”
“I don’t care if you’re fine or not. Even if you died, I wouldn’t shed a single tear,” Winifred snapped. “I just can’t face Mrs. Brown if something happens to you. After all, you were injured saving me. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have bothered coming to see you!”
Yvan lowered his head, his lips pressed tightly together, looking like a schoolboy being reprimanded.
“From now on, you are not allowed to shower by yourself. Have Fitch or a nurse…”
As Winifred was speaking, the door was suddenly pushed open, and a nurse came in with a treatment cart. “Time to disinfect the wound.”
The nurse picked up a few cotton swabs, dipped them in iodine, and said to Winifred, “Here, miss, help your boyfriend lift his shirt.”
Winifred froze, instinctively looking for Fitch, only to realize he had disappeared at some point.
She hesitated, not helping. Yvan had to do it himself, but the pain made his movements slow.
The nurse couldn't stand it. “Miss, could you please help your boyfriend? Can’t you see he’s sweating from the pain?”
