With a slam, she shut the door in his face.
Yvan fumbled to catch the bear, standing there stunned, a sharp pain piercing his heart.
So this was what it felt like to let go. It was agonizing. Even seeing her happy, he was still in agony.
Over the next few days, Winifred and Marcus went on several more dates.
Marcus was definitely a young man's man. He took Winifred go-karting, bungee jumping, and skiing—ticking off every thrilling activity on the list.
Their relationship seemed to be heating up quickly. Within just two or three days, they were already holding hands.
Yvan continued to follow them in secret. Seeing Winifred's joyful smile, he tried to convince himself that her happiness was all that mattered. What was a little of his own pain compared to her joy?
That evening, Marcus asked Winifred out again.
This time, Yvan didn't follow. He wondered if it was time for him to truly let go.
She had found her happiness. What was the point of tailing them like a third wheel, only to wallow in misery?
Yvan cooked for himself and opened the jar of chili sauce that Winifred had given to Fitch.
The sauce was incredibly spicy. It made him break out in a sweat, and his stomach began to ache faintly. But this was the only way he could get a taste of her now.
...
Yvan checked his watch. It was already eleven o'clock, and Winifred wasn't back yet. She had never been this late before.
He couldn't stop himself from calling Marcus.
He didn't dare call Winifred, but Marcus was his subordinate and had to obey him.
"Mr. Brown, is something wrong?"
"What are you and Winifred doing right now?" Yvan's voice was cold. "It's almost midnight. Why haven't you taken her home?"
Marcus's face was a mixture of shock and disbelief.
Ex-boyfriend? Mr. Brown had set him up with his own ex-girlfriend? What kind of twisted game was this?
"He did something to wrong me in the past, and now he's trying to make up for it," Winifred explained. "So the better you treat me, the more pleased he'll be."
Marcus's confusion slowly cleared, and he nodded repeatedly. "Oh, I get it now."
"As long as you keep me happy, Mr. Brown will be happy." Winifred lifted her chin. "Let's keep looking around. I don't want to go back yet."
Marcus looked hesitant. "But Mr. Brown..."
"Don't worry about him. I'm here. He won't dare say a thing," Winifred said, walking ahead.
After a moment's hesitation, Marcus followed her.
