After Winifred hung up, she stared into space, completely lost in thought.
She didn't care about the house. What bothered her was why her father wouldn't even call her himself. In his eyes, was she no longer his daughter?
She didn't want to believe it, couldn't believe it.
She had to ask him in person.
Just then, a text message popped up on her phone. She opened it. It was from Yvan.
"Winifred, are you coming back for dinner? I can cook for you."
Winifred stared at the message.
If the bond between a father and daughter could simply disappear, how could love be eternal?
Yvan seemed head over heels for her now, but who knew if his feelings would change in a few years?
Insecurity runs deep in her — shaped by her family and her time with Yves.
She couldn't help but expect the worst.
As she was lost in her thoughts, a friend request popped up. She opened it and saw the name: Joseph.
Winifred's heart pounded as she shakily accepted the request.
A message came through almost immediately. "Winifred, it's your dad."
Fighting her excitement, Winifred initiated a video call.
She hadn't seen her father in over a decade.
But the call was immediately rejected, followed by another message. "Winifred, it's not a good time for a video call."
Was it really not a good time, or did he just not want to see her?
If a small-town dentist made that much, someone in Riverside City must be making at least four or five hundred thousand.
A generous income, but she'll squeeze every cent from an elder. Some hearts stay cold, no matter how long you shelter them.
"Mom, what do we do?" Darren asked. "Winifred won't agree."
"Just get her to come back first. Tell her you'll negotiate when she's here," Fiona said, a glint in her eye. "Tell her you're willing to pay back the child support."
"Okay."
Darren quickly typed a reply. "Winifred, how about this? Just come back first, okay? We can discuss the child support in person. Dad wants to see you, too."
Winifred stared at the last few words, and a lump formed in her throat.
Did he really want to see her?
Fighting back tears, she replied, "Okay, I'll check my schedule and see when I'm free."
