Todd leaned in for a closer look and froze, blurting out, "Winifred?"
Recognized, Winifred looked at him calmly and gave a slight, polite nod.
"It really is you, Winifred!" Todd looked from Yvan to Winifred, then to the girl in the bed. "What's going on with you two?"
"My kid is sick, so we're here at the hospital," Winifred explained, leaving Yvan to account for his own presence.
Todd looked at Yvan. Yvan, with his long legs crossed, shot Todd an indifferent glance. "Shouldn't you be with your girlfriend instead of standing here?"
With Winifred present, Todd knew he couldn't ask any more questions.
"...Alright, I'll go back over there." He ground his teeth, then forced a smile for Winifred. "See you around, Winifred."
Winifred's expression was blank; she didn't respond.
Yvan's face clearly said, get lost.
Todd slunk away and sat down next to his girlfriend.
Yvan turned his attention back to his phone. A moment later, a text message came in. It was from Todd.
"Yvan, what are you doing with Winifred? Taking her kid to the doctor?"
Yvan texted back, "None of your business."
"Seriously, Yvan, the woman's married with a kid. What are you doing playing family doctor?"
Todd found the whole scene unbelievable. He glanced over at them again.
A young man, a young woman, and a child between them. To any outsider, they looked exactly like a couple taking their sick child to the hospital.
"Don't tell me you're still not over Winifred. Are you trying to break up her marriage?"
Yvan stared at the message. If that man treated her badly, if he didn't cherish her, why shouldn't he?
Yvan let out a short, derisive laugh and leaned closer to her. "Busy? Is he really busy, or does he just not care about you and your daughter?"
Winifred quickly leaned back, a flush of anger rising in her cheeks. "Yvan, what are you trying to say?"
Yvan leaned back too. "Nothing. I just want you to see your husband for who he really is."
"I know exactly who my husband is. I don't need you here trying to stir up trouble," Winifred said coldly.
"You're just deluding yourself," Yvan retorted.
Winifred fell silent.
She didn't want to speak to him anymore.
Just then, Delia stirred and her eyes fluttered open. She saw Winifred immediately.
"Auntie," she murmured.
