Eleanor lingered outside the door for a moment, but when she heard no further sounds, she walked away.
Shortly after she left, Lyra slipped out of the room. She considered tracking her mother down to explain the situation, but seeing that she was already gone, Lyra headed back to her own bedroom.
A second after her door clicked shut, Eleanor stepped out from the shadows of the staircase landing.
She had seen Lyra walking out of Miles's room.
She had seen it very clearly.
Taking a deep breath, Eleanor's eyes swirled with a turbulent storm of emotions.
The next day.
At the breakfast table.
Lyra was the last one to come downstairs.
The moment she walked into the dining room, she could sense a subtle tension in the air.
She took her seat as a maid brought her a plate and silverware.
Just as she picked up her fork, Harrison spoke.
"Lyra, the company has an overseas assignment. Would you be interested in taking it?"
Lyra looked up, momentarily surprised, before nodding smoothly. "Sure."
She had been desperately wanting an opportunity to prove her capabilities.
Of course, there was another reason, too.
She still had over twenty days left in her divorce cooling-off period, and time felt like it was crawling.
Keeping herself busy was the only way to make the days pass faster.
From a spot no one was watching, Miles lowered his gaze, a dark, unreadable smirk playing on his lips.
"Where is it?" Lyra asked. "I don't think I've heard about this project."
Harrison calmly explained. "It's at our branch in the US. Initially, considering you just got back, I didn't want to send you away for two weeks. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how crucial this partnership is to the company. I just wouldn't feel comfortable trusting anyone else with it."
