Lyra shook her head. "No, it wasn't like that. I came home late last night after you and Dad were asleep. Miles came in completely wasted, so I helped him to his room. He mistook me for someone else and mumbled something about a girl he liked. It just reminded me of what you said before, so I was curious."
"Mistook you..."
Eleanor fell into a deep silence, clearly analyzing the truth behind the statement.
Seeing her mother's strange expression, Lyra's curiosity only deepened.
"Mom, why that look? Is there something I don't know?"
"It's nothing. I'm probably just overthinking it."
Eleanor offered a faint smile and walked over to sit beside Lyra.
"I haven't brought this up since you came home, mostly because you just got out of a bad marriage and needed some peace. But I have to ask... do you have any intention of dating again?"
Under her mother's watchful gaze, Lyra slowly shook her head.
"No. It's too exhausting."
Just dealing with Maxwell had drained her physically and emotionally.
She felt like throwing herself into another relationship would literally shorten her lifespan.
"Right now, I just want to live for myself."
Eleanor looked slightly conflicted. "You're still young, Lyra. A lot of things aren't as simple as they seem on the surface."
She paused, gently pressing the issue.
"Honestly, I think if the right option came along, it wouldn't hurt to give it another try. Don't you agree?"
Lyra could tell her mother was already set on a mission.
