Courtney nodded, her words sounding like a self-pep talk.
"I can do this!"
Seeing her enthusiasm, a smile touched Lyra's lips, her eyes filled with unconcealed fondness and admiration.
"Great. Go back and start prepping. Don't forget to get the file from Quinn."
"Will do!"
Courtney jumped to her feet, practically buzzing with energy. She was vibrant and lively again, completely shedding the nervous wreck she had been when she walked in.
After she left, Lyra was alone in her office once more.
Everything seemed perfectly aligned.
Yet, she still felt a lingering unease.
Maxwell in particular was a loose cannon; there was no telling what he might pull next.
After some thought, Lyra pulled out her phone, found Aria's contact, and dialed the number.
It rang for a long time, but no one answered.
She had no choice but to hang up.
But she couldn't just leave it at that.
The only way to deal with Maxwell right now was to have Aria tie him down. Only then would he have no time, no opportunity to corner her, and no chance to completely upend her life again.
Without hesitation, Lyra stood up, grabbed her coat, and left the office.
The hospital.
Inside the ward.
Aria lay motionless on the bed, her face utterly drained of color, her eyes completely hollow.
Her manager, standing beside her, was furious at the sight of her.
"How could you just stay silent about something like this? Tell me, does the boss know?"
Maxwell had assigned this manager to her. He was young but fiercely ambitious, which was exactly why Maxwell had chosen him to handle Aria.
When Aria didn't respond, the man's anger flared.
