Cecilia's anxiety gnawed at her.
After agonizing over it for a few minutes, she stood up and walked to the door. The moment she pulled it open, she was met by a wall of imposing bodyguards.
They stood there like massive sentinels, clearly under strict orders not to let her or Miles out of their sight.
"Ms. Chambers, if you require anything, simply let us know. However, you are not permitted to leave this suite."
Cecilia's brow furrowed sharply.
"What exactly is that supposed to mean? He's still completely unconscious. We have no idea the extent of his internal injuries. You refuse to take him to a real hospital, and earlier, you brought in some sketchy doctor who barely even checked his vitals. If he wasn't critically injured, why is he still out cold?"
The bodyguard offered a helpless shrug. "We're just following orders. Please don't make this difficult for us, Ms. Chambers. Thank you."
Realizing they weren't going to budge, she knew arguing was a waste of breath.
She desperately needed a backup plan.
Shutting the door, Cecilia rushed back to the bedside. Looking down at Miles, her panic intensified.
She pulled out her phone, dialing her mother's number.
But the moment she hit send, she realized there was absolutely zero signal.
He had jammed the entire floor.
The chilling realization only amplified her dread.
She started second-guessing everything. Was the man telling the truth at all?
What if he wasn't Miles' father, but a deadly enemy? What if he was keeping Miles trapped here to bleed out, using him as a pawn in some twisted game?
The suffocating silence of the room made her imagination run wild with horrific scenarios.
Knock, knock.
The sudden sound made her jump.
She spun around as a bodyguard stepped inside.
He was holding a covered silver tray.
