"Why are you here?"
Cecilia was completely overwhelmed and had no idea where to even begin. She frantically prioritized. "I'll explain everything later. How do you feel? Are you in pain? Should I scream for a doctor, or try to get you to a hospital?"
Miles braced his hands against the mattress and forced himself to sit up, rubbing his pounding temples as the memories slowly trickled back.
He had left the Lennox Manor, dropped his things off at a suburban safe house, driven to the military base to finalize his discharge papers, and finally stopped at a shopping center.
He was walking back to his car in the underground lot when he sensed someone trailing him. Despite his lightning-fast reflexes, a brutal swing from a metal pipe had connected squarely with his shoulder.
The attacker had been highly trained and struck with lethal precision, leaving Miles almost no room to counter.
But Miles hadn't gone down without taking his pound of flesh. Whatever injuries Miles had sustained, the attacker had suffered tenfold.
If the assailant hadn't had a team of reinforcements, Miles would never have ended up in this state.
His focus snapped back to the present, his sharp gaze locking onto Cecilia.
He had zero memory of seeing her in the parking lot.
Sensing his confusion, Cecilia quickly explained, "I was just grabbing a few things at the mall. I was walking to my car when I saw you passed out on the concrete."
She paused, taking a shaky breath.
"I was going to call an ambulance, but this man intercepted me. He claimed he was closely related to you. He knew all your personal details, and since I couldn't physically carry you myself, I followed his instructions. Next thing I knew, we were locked in here."
Tears of frustration welled in her eyes.
"It's all my fault. I shouldn't have been so gullible."
Her explanation filled in the missing blanks perfectly.
Miles knew exactly who this "close relative" was.
He just hadn't expected the old man to be this audacious.
Thank God he woke up when he did, or who knows what kind of leverage the old man would have manufactured.
