As soon as they stopped, before Maxwell could even get a word of greeting out, Miles spoke.
"Lyra is divorcing you. If you know what's good for you, you'd better sign those papers quietly. The Lennox family doesn't want a dime of your money, so there's no need for a complicated division of assets. However..."
With a sudden shift, Miles's tone turned ice-cold.
"If you want to be stubborn about this, I'll hire the absolute best lawyers. As everyone knows, the Lennox legal team has never lost a case."
Miles's words were a naked threat.
The slight respect Maxwell had felt toward him earlier evaporated the moment he finished speaking, replaced by intense resentment.
"This is between the two of us. You don't need to trouble yourself over it, Miles."
"Don't talk to me like we're family."
A mocking smile touched the corner of Miles's lips.
"You should know perfectly well that Lyra was the only one who ever cared about you. The rest of our family never gave you the time of day."
It was the harsh truth, and the truth rarely went down easy.
"Maxwell, don't push your luck. Do you honestly think you could have secured your position as the head of the Sterling Group without your marriage to Lyra? You want to reap the benefits without doing your part. It would be incredibly easy for me to drag you down from your little throne right now."
If Miles's earlier words were just a simple threat, the atmosphere now was explosive.
He wasn't giving Maxwell a shred of respect.
It seemed that in his eyes, Maxwell was nothing more than an expendable pawn.
