"Miles just spoke to me about the divorce. Are you..." Are you really sure about this?

Maxwell couldn't bring himself to say the rest.

It felt as though the words were violently stuck in his throat, making it impossibly difficult to speak.

"I already told you last time. I've hired a lawyer. I don't care what you think. The divorce agreement is in the study at your house. Sign it and mail it to me. We'll go through the procedures on schedule. From now on, you go your way, and I'll go mine. Isn't that for the best?"

Before Maxwell could answer, she continued on her own.

"After so many years of marriage, I really don't want things to end on such an ugly note."

This was the biggest concession she could offer him.

And her final shred of sentimentality.

After all, he was the man she had loved since she was fourteen. That period of her life carried all the tender memories of her youth, and she simply didn't want the story to end with an imperfect conclusion.

Thinking of this, a faint smile graced Lyra's lips.

"It's getting late. If you don't have anything else to say, you can leave. I'm a bit tired and want to rest."
