In an instant, the rowdy heirs fell silent.
Sophie’s rosy lips parted, and she spoke softly.
“Uncle, if I win this round, I want…”
She deliberately paused, her gaze sweeping toward Liam, lips curling in faint musement.
“…I want the position of Director of Design at Morgan Group.”
“You’ve gone too far!” Liam barked. “Don’t push it!”
Everyone in their circle knew how desperately Liam had coveted that position
If not for his obsession with it, he never would have schemed to have Lena impersonate Liora.
Now his plan had backfired, leaving him with no position at Morgan Group at all.
And if Sophie could claim the role he had long dreamed of–off the back of a single card game–what did that make him?
A laughingstock.
“I’m not taking it from you, am I? What’s your problem?” Sophie replied coolly
Compared to Liam’s rage, her composure made her look all the more in control
She turned, resting her pale arm on the back of her chair. “Uncle, is that acceptable?”
Marcus’s hawk eyes lingered on her casually swinging arm, so white it almost dazzled.
“And if you lose?”
“Then I’ll cut my salary in half and work like a horse for Morgan Group.”
“Deal.”
That single word from Marcus snapped the last of Liam’s composure.
“Uncle, that position is too important to gamble with-”
Marcus’s sharp gaze swept across him, suffocating in its weight. “Are you teaching me how to do my job?”
“I–I didn’t mean it like that…”
“Play, or don’t. If you don’t, then accept the forfeit. No one’s forcing you.” Marcus cut him off, voice cold.
Liam heard the displeasure and dared not argue further. He poured all his energy into the game instead.
But as the second round began, his nerves collapsed.
He made a mistake almost immediately.
Sophie’s lips lifted into a faint smile. “Liam, you slipped.”
He forced himself to steady, snapping back, “That was my tactic.”
“Losing to me is your tactic?”
Sophie tossed down her card, neatly trumping his hand.
10:51
Compared to her swift defeat in the first round, this reversal had the crowd’s Blood pumping.
The game was complex, demanding both luck and lightning fast calculations.
For a novice like Sophie to win was about as likely as winning the lottery.
Liam, are you for real? You played the wrong card. If you’d held onto it, you would’ve won easily.”
Brandon Lawson sneered, glancing at his hand.
Liam’s face flushed crimson as he slammed his cards down.
“Playing cards is boring. Let’s change the contest.”
He knew his nerves were shot. Continuing with cards, he risked losing.
To win, he needed to change the battlefield.
“Like brother, like sister,” Brandon muttered. “First Lena tried to add terms when she thought she was winning, now you’re changing the game mid–match. If you two weren’t siblings, I’d say you were made for each other.”
The crowd laughed, making Liam’s face darken further.
He ignored them, eyes locked on Sophie.
“Well? Do you agree?”
“Fine.” Sophie leaned back, tossing aside her cards, her attitude relaxed.
“What’s the final round, then?”
“Shooting.”
The moment he said it, Celine couldn’t stay quiet.
“Liam, do you have no shame? Everyone knows you won shooting championships in college!”
“You’re changing the contest to your best skill? And you think that’s fair?”
The other heirs didn’t bother hiding their contempt.
“Women already don’t have the advantage in shooting, and you deliberately pick that? Winning like this means nothing.”
“Why don’t you just say you’ll only play in events you can win? Shameless doesn’t even begin to cover it.”
“Next time, don’t tell people you run in our circle. You’re an embarrassment.”
Liam’s face burned purple, wishing he could sink into the ground.
“Stop it, all of you! My brother just thinks winning in cards would be too easy. He wanted to give Sophie a chance!” Lena’s voice trembled, but her defense was weak.
Celine rolled her eyes. “And beating her in shooting would be honorable?”
“You–you…” Lena’s eyes welled with tears. She clutched Liam’s arm desperately, seeking protection.
But Liam was barely holding himself together, with no mind to shield her.
Sophie sat with her legs crossed, watching their chaos as if it had nothing to do with her.
