**Chapter 12**
Sophie’s voice was resolute, cutting through the tension that hung thick in the air. “There must be some sort of mistake with the test results. I demand another test,” she declared, her determination evident.
Marcus regarded her with a slight lift of his chin, a gesture that seemed to radiate confidence. “Perhaps you should first take a closer look at the name on Sample Two,” he suggested, his tone almost mocking.
With a flicker of apprehension, Sophie cast her eyes downward, and there it was—the name that sent a jolt through her. Liam.
“You played me?” she hissed, her fury igniting like a wildfire in her chest, her eyes narrowing dangerously.
“Before I can acknowledge the child as mine,” Marcus replied, his demeanor cool and unyielding, “I must be certain that nothing ever transpired between you and Liam.”
“Mr. Morgan, you truly believe you’ve thought of everything, don’t you?” Sophie retorted, a scoff escaping her lips as she struggled to contain her rising anger.
He extended another report toward her, the paper crinkling slightly in his grip. “This document confirms that I am indeed the biological father,” he stated matter-of-factly.
A tempest of conflicting emotions swirled within Sophie, each one vying for dominance. The relief of discovering Liam wasn’t the father was quickly overshadowed by the unsettling reality of being connected to Marcus. The implications of that connection loomed large, and it filled her with dread.
“So now,” Marcus continued, his voice devoid of warmth, “tell me what you intend to trade for this child.”
“I’ve already made myself clear. I’m not here to threaten you with the baby. I refuse to negotiate,” she asserted, her tone unwavering.
“Really?” Marcus countered, sliding a contract across the desk with a calculated ease. “That land in West River? Your father seemed quite keen on it during the last auction.”
The weight of his words settled over her like a dark cloud. “So what is this? Are you suggesting that land as a means to coerce me into an abortion? Or something else entirely?” she demanded, her voice icy as she glared at him, a fierce wildcat unafraid to confront her predator.
Marcus’s expression hardened, his eyes narrowing as he processed her words. “If you choose not to be involved, I can raise the baby alone. I’ll ensure the identity remains confidential…”
“You think I would allow you to carry around my greatest vulnerability?” he shot back, his voice sharp and uncompromising.
Sophie’s brow furrowed in frustration. “Then what is it that you truly want?” she asked, her voice taut with tension.
“You may keep the baby,” Marcus replied, his eyes dark and unwavering, “but you will need to sever all ties with Liam.”
“I have no desire to see the mother of my child entangled with another man,” he stated, his tone leaving no room for negotiation.
The atmosphere in the room crackled with unspoken challenges, each of them standing their ground, the stakes higher than either had anticipated.
