Chapter 141
Chapter 141
Sophie hurried to her brother. “I’m fine, Ethan. Let’s just go home.”
Ethan Chandler cast a subtle glance over her, his eyes darkening when they landed on the scarf around her neck. It was a limited edition men’s
scarf from DA, and in this weather, it made no sense for her to wear one.
Realization hit him. His hand clenched tightly at his side.
“Sophie, wait outside for me. Last night Marcus put in a lot of effort to find you. Mom and Dad told me to thank him properly.”
“Ethan, I’ll thank him myself another time. You don’t need to-”
“It’s fine. Go get in the car first.”
Marcus’s gaze slid past Ethan, settling on Sophie.
She pressed her lips together, said nothing more, and turned to leave.
The villa’s hall grew silent with just Ethan and Marcus left. Ethan wasted no time.
“What exactly did you do to my sister last night?”
His voice was harsh, his eyes simmering with anger.
Their father’s health was still fragile, so Ethan had taken their parents home midway through the banquet. When he later learned what had happened, he’d scoured Riverland all night using every connection he had–only to find nothing.
It wasn’t until this morning, when the Morgans sent word, that he knew Marcus had found Sophie and brought her back.
But the moment Ethan saw Sophie’s strange demeanor, he knew last night hadn’t been simple.
“You should be asking what she did to me,” Marcus replied calmly, a faint smile tugging at his lips, though it never reached his eyes.
Ethan’s frown deepened. “Sophie’s just a girl. What could she possibly do to you? Are you trying to push the blame onto her?”
“A man of your stature, Marcus, hiding behind a woman after something like this–isn’t that cowardly?”
For a flicker of a moment, something complicated passed through Marcus’s dark gaze. Ethan’s words weren’t wrong–but the truth was Sophie had been the one to force herself on him.
Not that he’d ever say it aloud.
“And another thing,” Ethan pressed, voice sharpening. “After you found her last night, you could have taken her straight home. Instead, you brought her here. Alone. Just the two of you. Did it never cross your mind what kind of rumors would spread?
“Everyone in Riverland knows she was once engaged to Liam. Even though that’s over, people still talk. If there’s gossip about the two of you, no one will blame you. But Sophie? She’ll be drowned in slander!”
The smile on Marcus’s lips froze. His gaze darkened.
“I don’t have to remain Liam’s uncle.”
Liam was only a branch of the Morgan family. Even with the old man behind him, Marcus could easily have him cast out.

Chapter 141
Ethan hadn’t expected that response. For a moment, he was stunned. Then his expression hardened.
“Marcus, did you and Sophie already…”
He trailed off when Marcus’s serious eyes met his. The answer was clear enough. No need to ask further.
“My relationship with her isn’t for anyone else to meddle in,” Marcus said flatly.
“She’s my sister. I won’t stand by and do nothing.” Ethan shot back, his voice firm.
“Sometimes the right kind of freedom is what helps her grow. Sophie isn’t as fragile as you think. She can stand on her own.”
Marcus’s tone was calm, but the weight of his presence left no room for doubt.
Ethan’s fists clenched. He was about to retort when his phone buzzed with a message. Sophie was asking why he hadn’t come out yet.
He slipped the phone back into his pocket and fixed Marcus with one last glare.
“Either way, I won’t let Sophie be hurt again.”
With that, he turned and left.
Outside, Sophie rushed up to him. “Ethan, what did you say to him?”
Ethan rested a hand on her shoulder. “Get in the car. Mom and Dad are waiting at home.”
“Okay.”
She followed him into the car.
The ride was silent, tension thick in the air. Sophie twisted her fingers together nervously, like a child who had done something wrong.
When they reached the Chandler villa, Ethan finally broke the silence.
“Sophie, just answer me one thing. Last night–was it your choice?”
Her eyes widened, her cheeks blazing red.
“Ethan, you’ve got it wrong. Marcus and I didn’t-”
“You think I didn’t notice what you’re hiding under that scarf?” His voice was stern. “Are you still going to lie to me?”
