Chapter 156 An Invitation from the Old Master
Chris admitted defeat, bowed slightly to Marcus, and turned to leave.
Marcus pulled out his phone and glanced at the empty screen. His brows furrowed.
By all logic, if Sophie was unharmed, she would have called back after seeing the pile of missed calls.
But she hadn’t.
Marcus didn’t dare let his thoughts run further. His grip on the phone tightened.
Back at Riverland University’s infirmary, Sophie had rested a little longer. Feeling no serious pain, she decided to leave.
But the moment she opened the door, an elderly man with white hair appeared in the corridor.
Dressed in a traditional suit, his presence was dignified though his back was slightly stooped. Behind him trailed a wall of black–suited bodyguards–a sign of his status.
“Miss Chandler, good day. I’m the steward of the Morgan family’s old estate. You may call me Mr. Lewis.”
He bowed formally, hands clasped before his stomach.
“The old master would like to see you at the estate. If it’s convenient, please come with us.”
Sophie’s brows knitted. “Mr. Lewis, Liam and I are no longer engaged. I don’t see why the old master would summon me.”
“The master surely has his reasons. Servants like us cannot speculate.”
Though his tone was respectful, there was no mistaking the pressure in his voice.
“Miss Chandler, I must insist you accompany us.”
Sophie silently studied the scene before her, calculating.
Riverland University, once bustling with the anniversary crowd, now lay eerily empty. Every ten meters stood a Morgan bodyguard in uniform
This wasn’t an invitation. It was an abduction in polite disguise.
Her fingers tightened at her side, though she forced herself to appear calm.
“If the old master is so insistent, I have no reason as a junior to refuse.”
“Lead the way, Mr. Lewis.”
He bowed again. “Thank you for your cooperation. This way, please.”
She followed him all the way to the university gate. Along the road, there was no one else in sight except Morgan guards.
By the Maybach parked at the entrance, Sophie stopped and turned to Mr. Lewis.
“There were plenty of prominent guests here for the anniversary today. Where are they now?”
His expression did not falter. “When you meet the master, all will be clear.”
A chill swept through Sophie’s heart, a growing sense of foreboding.

Chapter 156 An Invitation from the Old Master
“Please get in, Miss Chandler.”
Expressionless, he held the car door open.
Sophie quickly stepped inside, her features tight with unease.
Twenty minutes later, the car rolled to a stop at the Morgan family estate.
The last time she had come here, she was still Liam’s fiancée. Now, barely a month later, everything had changed.
There was no time for nostalgia. She followed Mr. Lewis into the grand hall.
“The master is waiting inside. Please go in.”
Mr. Lewis ushered her into the main parlor before stepping back.
Sophie entered. An elderly man, spry and sharp–eyed, sat calmly on the sofa.
He wore a soft, comfortable home suit, his presence relaxed, free of intimidation.
With his full head of silver hair and kindly smile, he might have passed for an ordinary old man.
“Miss Chandler, welcome. Please, sit.”
His voice was warm, inviting.
Sophie didn’t hesitate. She sat across from him.
“If you
wished to see me, a simple message would’ve sufficed. Why such a spectacle?”
“Many high–ranking people attended today’s anniversary. Yet you cleared the grounds and sent Mr. Lewis himself to fetch me. Don’t you think that’s a bit much?”
The old master’s lips curved faintly. “Sharp tongue, young lady.”
Sophie kept her composure. “You jest, sir. I’ve no quarrel with you. What smoke and fire could there be?”
Her tone hardened. “But since I’m here, I want to know–those people at Riverland University, will you release them?”
Her words carried a sudden chill, her aura flaring without restraint even in front of the patriarch.
“The Morgans may control Riverland, but those guests have done nothing against you. Surely you won’t destroy them needlessly.”
Sophie wasn’t naïve. She knew he had to have leverage over her.
And in Riverland University, her only weakness was-
“Sophie.”
The familiar voice made her whip around.
“Principal Harris!”
She rushed to his side. “Are you all right? Did he harm you?”
The principal staggered toward her. “I’m fine.”
