Chapter 157 Do You Have Feelings for Marcus?
“Since I’m already here at the Morgan estate, you don’t need to hold anything over me. Surely you don’t think I’ll run away now.”
“Hahaha!”
The old master burst out laughing. “It’s been a long time since I met such an amusing junior.”
He turned toward the servants beside him. “Escort Principal Harris out. I want to speak with Miss Chandler alone.”
“We leave together, Sophie. As your teacher, I won’t abandon you.” Principal Harris’s voice was firm.
Sophie patted his arm. “Don’t worry, sir. I won’t let myself suffer. I’ll feel better if you go.”
“This way, Principal Harris.”
Two servants bowed respectfully, gesturing for him to follow.
He frowned deeply, leaving Sophie with one last warning. “Please, be very careful.”
With that, he left the estate under the servants‘ escort.
Now, only Sophie and the old master remained in the hall.
She sat back down, leaning slightly against the chair, arms crossed before her chest.
Her pose seemed casual, but every muscle was taut, nerves ringing like alarm bells.
That genial act of his earlier had only been a test.
Now that the test was over, the real struggle would begin.
“I heard you used to be devoted to Liam,” the old man said, turning his sharp eyes on her. “But recently you cast him aside, even went so far as to end the engagement. Why the change of heart?”
Sophie met his gaze coolly. “In Riverland, nothing escapes your notice. If you wanted to know what Liam did to me, you’d already have the truth. Why should I be the one to peel open old wounds and spell it out for you?”
Her words were evasive, offering nothing useful. Until she understood his true purpose, she would reveal nothing.
“No wonder Marcus admires you. Bold and clever–unlike most.”
The words sounded like praise, but his eyes were full of menace.
Sophie’s arms tightened slightly, though her gaze glittered. Finally, she understood why he had summoned her,
“To be honest,” he continued, “if not for your history with Liam–if your past hadn’t been so public–I would have liked to see you and Marcus together.”
“The Morgan family is vast. Marcus alone bears a heavy load. With you at his side, you could have been his greatest support.”
“But, alas…”
He sighed heavily, as though in regret.
“The Morgans stand at the top of Riverland. Our successors cannot carry scandal. You were once Liam’s fiancée. Even without marriage, the stain remains, and that stain could ruin Marcus.”

Chapter 157 Do You Have Feelings for Marcus?
“My heir, the future head of the family, cannot bear a single blemish.”
His tone carried authority that pressed down like iron.
“After all that, do you understand now, Miss Chandler?”
“You’ve made yourself perfectly clear.”
Her brows furrowed slightly, though her eyes showed puzzlement.
“But tell me–aren’t you mistaken?”
“My dealings with Marcus are strictly professional. Why trouble me with this?”
“Professional?”
He chuckled coldly. “If it’s only business, then explain the West City land.”
“A billion–dollar property, handed to your family just like that. Do you expect me to believe Marcus gave it away without reason?”
Sophie kept her tone even, though her heart skipped.
“You misunderstand. I bought that land fair and square. A proper business deal.”
“If you doubt me, check the bank records. I already transferred the full payment. I purchased it properly–nothing was gifted.”
“Is that so?”
His cloudy eyes locked onto hers, heavy with unspoken pressure.
Her fist clenched tightly in her lap, but she refused to look away.
She was gambling–that Marcus had already prepared for this day, ensuring no trail would ever betray the truth.
Each second dragged like a year. Finally, he eased back, stroking his chin.
“It seems I may have been mistaken about that land. But perhaps there’s something else you don’t know.”
“Two hours ago, Marcus learned you had fallen at Riverland University. He abandoned his work and boarded a private jet. He’s on his way back as we speak.”
Sophie’s eyes widened. She pulled out her phone and discovered it had shut down on its own.
Damn. He must have panicked after failing to reach her.
“Maybe you hold no intentions toward Marcus,” the old man said gravely. “But that boy’s feelings for you… are not so simple.”
